Because of their hard work, BASIS Independent students grow into self-sufficient learners who are often recognized for their vast multitude of talents in and out of the classroom. We seek these opportunities out on behalf of our students, but they are also often recognized organically by meeting eligibility for prestigious national and international awards.

2017–18 Notable Recognitions
- At the 2018 Greater New York Scholastic Chess Tournament, one BASIS Independent Manhattan student placed in his Elementary Under 1500 Players division
- Our BASIS Independent Brooklyn MATHCOUNTS team won the Regional Championship and moved forward to compete in the New York State Competition
- This year, students from BASIS Independent Silicon Valley qualified for the Junior Varsity History Bowl National Championship in Washington D.C.
- 37 BASIS Independent McLean students were inducted into the National Honor and Junior Honor Societies
- At the National History Bee Regional Finals, one BASIS Independent Fremont student qualified for the International Geography Bee, two others qualified for US Geography Olympiad History Bee, and two of them qualified for Nationals
- A seventh grader from BASIS Independent Silicon Valley won the CBS Bay Area Spelling Bee and went on to compete in the National Scripps Spelling Bee
- The BASIS Independent Brooklyn Varsity Girls Volleyball Team placed second in the NYC CSAA League Competition
- One BASIS Independent McLean student won a CyberStart scholarship, a skills program designed to supply specialist cyber security education to young people across the U.S.
- A fourth grader at BASIS Independent Manhattan placed 2nd the 2018 American Protégé International Piano & strings competitions, in which musicians from 20 countries and throughout the U.S. competed
- The BASIS Independent Silicon Valley Quiz Bowl Team placed 2nd out of 192 teams at Middle School Quiz Bowl Nationals in Chicago
- Over the summer, one sixth grade student co-starred in a new Netflix series before school started at BASIS Independent Brooklyn
2018–19 Notable Recognitions
BASIS Independent McLean:
- Their MATHCOUNTS team won both the regional and state championship in Virginia for the third year in row.
- One student won the Virginia State JV History Championship in both the Bowl (solo competitor in team event) and the Bee (individual player event).
- The Debate team competed at the Broad Run Invitational, taking 2nd place in the junior varsity division.
- The Science Olympiad team (Division B middle school) participated in the Virginia State Finals at the University of Virginia, with two students placing 2nd in Mystery Architecture, two students placing 3rd in Disease Detective, two students placing 5th in Thermodynamics, and two students placing 5th in Anatomy/Physiology.
BASIS Independent Brooklyn:
- The Science Bowl team advanced to the New York City Science Bowl Semifinals.
- The co-ed junior high school soccer team won the league championships for the second year in a row.
- The MATHCOUNTS team placed first in the Brooklyn regional competition and advanced to the state championship.
- On the National Latin Exam, 30 students received awards of distinction, including two Gold Summa Cum Laude.
BASIS Independent Manhattan:
- A grade 1 student became the K–1 Under 400 City Co-Champion at the 2019 Greater NY Scholastic Chess Championships.
- A team of students in grades 2–5 participated in the Noetic Learning Math Contest and placed 5th in the country; 13 students made the National Honor Roll (Top 10%).
- One grade 7 student and his soccer team were invited to participate in the Jefferson Cup in Richmond, VA. It is one of the top showcase and college recruitment tournaments in the country.
BASIS Independent Fremont:
- Two students qualified for Nationals in the History Bee and Science bee for 2019.
- Five students competed in the Science Olympiad and achieved 2nd place in the Pentathlon, Estimania, and Mission Possible categories.
- In Mathleagues, four students won the 1st place sweepstakes as a team.
- One student won a 2nd place medal (twice) in the U.S. International Competition for a violin performance.
BASIS Independent Silicon Valley:
- Nineteen seniors were named National Merit Finalists, and four seniors were named National Merit Scholarship winners.
- One student qualified to attend the State Geography Bee.
- Six students on the Speech & Debate team placed in the Top 10 at the Cal Berkeley Invitational; one student placed twice.
- The Investment Club students won 1st and 2nd place in the 2019 San Francisco Stock Market Game.
- High School Math Circle Team won 5th place at the Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament.
2019–20 Notable Recognitions
BASIS Independent Brooklyn
- The MATHCOUNTS team led the Brooklyn regional competition and made it to the state competition; and in the AMC 8, 3 of our students scored in the top 5%.
- The debate team won honors at the Urban Debate League High School Tournament to advance to the state competition and qualified for national.
- Our Varsity girls’ volleyball team made it to the second round of the CSAA League Playoffs this year!
- Leaders of our National Honor Society mobilized in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, helping first responders.
BASIS Independent Fremont
- In Math Olympiad, 2 students scored in the top 2% of the nation, 4 students scored in the top 10%, and 18 students scored within the top 50%.
- In Math Kangaroo, 9 students received the National Winner Magnet, 3 students received a gold medal, and 3 students received a State Winner Magnet.
BASIS Independent Manhattan
- One student was admitted into the Manhattan School of Music Precollege, and is also playing hockey in a double A travel team at a prestigious league Avalanche for the 2020–21 season.
- In the National Spanish Exam, 2 students won gold medals, 1 student won a silver medal, and 2 students won bronze medals. All 9 BASIS Independent Manhattan students who took the exam received a certificate of distinction.
- One student completed the academic program in Japanese from PreK up to the spring session of the 8th grade.
BASIS Independent McLean
- In 2019, 2 students were named National Merit Semifinalists.
- Over 83% of our high school students earned an AP scholar award, recognition from the College Board based on their performance in the 2019 AP exams.
- This year, BASIS Independent McLean was named among the best K–12 private schools in Virginia by rankings powerhouse Niche
- The Science Olympiad team won Division B Rookie of the Year from the Virginia Science Olympiad (VASO), which is awarded to the highest-scoring school in each division in its first or second year of competition.
- Our team won the 2020 VA Scholastic and College Chess Championship in the K–12 1440 Section; additionally, one of the students won the individual State Championship, and another won 2nd place in the State Championship.
- At the Virginia Latin Convention, 9 students received awards, including 1st place Reading Comp 1 Advanced and 2nd place Grammar 1 Advanced.
BASIS Independent Silicon Valley
- Twenty-four seniors were named 2020 National Merit Semifinalists, 21 seniors were named 2020 National Merit Finalists, and 3 seniors were named 2020 National Merit Scholarship winners.
- BASIS Independent Silicon Valley was named the #1 high school for STEM in Santa Clara County, the San Francisco Bay Area, and all of California—not to mention the #2 spot in America.
- Two students were invited to the Tournament of Champions, the most competitive debate tournament in the country, and both placed in the Public Forum Debate Octofinals.
- The DECA team stormed the State Career Development Conference, with 15 students placing in the top ten for their individual events; 18 students placed as overall top ten finishers for their event.
- Seven of our students participated in the Academic Decathalon Regionals and collected 24 medals total—our personal best in the team’s five-year history!
- The Division B Science Olympiad team took home 7 medals from the Churchill Invitational, including two 1st place medals; 10 medals at the Mira Loma Invitational; and 6 medals at the Kennedy Invitational.
- Math Circle participated at the Harvard-MIT Math Tournaments—11 students won 6th place in Geometry and our team finished 33rd overall in the February tournament, securing a guaranteed spot for the 2020–21 competition.

Colleges in the U.S. don’t have minimum academic entrance standards for applicants. On the other hand, Cambridge and Oxford, U.K. universities that are consistently ranked as the top in the world, do have minimum criteria for students to be considered. Oxford requires a score of 5 on at least three AP Exams and Cambridge expects a score of 5 on at least five AP Exams.
