What does curiosity look like in the classroom?

For Ms. Witherspoon’s grade 2 students, it looks a lot like a classroom full of eggs.

Each spring, eggs from a local farm arrive in the classroom. Over the following weeks, students become scientists: observing changes, documenting what they notice, making predictions, asking questions, and watching the life cycle unfold as chicks hatch.

Seeing the process happen before their eyes makes science tangible. Students observe the chicks’ development, test their predictions against real-world outcomes, and build a deeper understanding of living systems through direct experience.

The project also builds on science learning from earlier grades, where students explore the life cycles of butterflies, ladybugs, and tadpoles. By grade 2, students are applying increasingly sophisticated habits of mind, including curiosity, careful observation, patience, and evidence-based thinking. It is an example of how purposeful challenge and joy can work together to make learning something students can see, question, and remember.

What happens when students are encouraged to think further?

When Ellie A. was in Grade 7, she discovered that a history assignment could become much more than an assignment.

Ellie’s interest in World War II was personal. Conversations around her family’s dinner table introduced her to the challenges her family faced during the war, giving her a connection to the history that went beyond a textbook.

Through the Spring Education Group Discovery History Challenge, Ellie explored that connection more deeply, turning a subject that mattered to her into an opportunity for historical inquiry. She became the first-place overall winner of the competition, which drew more than 400 submissions from more than 20 schools.

As one parent shared, Ellie’s teacher inspired her to “dig deeper and raise the bar,” helping her see that she was capable of more than she initially imagined.

Her experience reflects an important part of the BASIS Independent Schools approach: giving students the knowledge, guidance, and confidence to take an idea further.

Where can a passion lead?

Now a senior, Aaron C., turned his passion for archery into an ambitious scholarly project.

What began as a childhood hobby became a 365-page book exploring the sport’s physics, history, engineering, and cultural traditions. The project represents hundreds of hours of research, writing, and revision.

Aaron’s experience shows what can happen when students have the space to pursue genuine intellectual interests. His learning extends beyond a single subject, bringing together disciplines and allowing him to explore a question simply because he wants to understand it more deeply.

What do the 2027 Niche Rankings tell us?

The 2027 Niche Rankings provide one external measure of the outcomes BASIS Independent students are achieving.

Two of the five qualifying BASIS Independent Schools placed among the Top 10 Best Private K–12 Schools in America: BASIS Independent Manhattan ranked No. 3 and BASIS Independent Brooklyn ranked No. 6.

BASIS Independent Schools also earned recognition in STEM and college-preparatory categories. BASIS Independent Silicon Valley ranked No. 4 among the Best High Schools for STEM in America, while BASIS Independent Fremont ranked No. 7.
