Gender equity is an established concept that many might find when browsing the internet or watching the news; however, it may not be a topic that is well known to younger generations for those around the ages 5-8, which may lead to confusion upon their eventual discovery of gender as a social construct. To understand this better, gender is a socially constructed, all encompassing term and equity, as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary, “refers to fairness or justice in the way people are treated, and especially freedom from bias or favoritism, as in ‘governed according to the principle of equity.’” Gender equity is fairness amongst all genders, including male, female, nonbinary, etc. My senior project aims to educate and introduce the concept of gender equity to younger generations through an illustrated children’s book, where it will be easy to understand while also captivating for the audience. The book will provide more insight to young children about the importance of gender equity. Because young kids are still new to the world, it is important to introduce gender equity to them at an early age, where they will have time to learn and understand the concept better. This children’s book will provide another way to teach the younger generations more about inclusivity for all genders.
