Mr. Hui-Peterson
Classics & Latin
Middle School, High School
Mr. Hui-Peterson is the Subject Expert Teacher for Latin and Classics. He holds dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Classics and History from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, along with a minor in Anthropology. While at UH Mānoa, he served as President of the Classics Club and was inducted into the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society. He also received a Manoa Opportunity Grant to participate in the Tell Timai archaeological project in Egypt.
“I am excited to bring an excitement and love for Latin,” he says. An experienced traveler, he is the Director of the World Travel Club for BASIS Independent Bothell, after successfully founding it at BASIS Independent Bellevue.
He was drawn as a teacher to BASIS Independent Schools because they offer “a unique experience allowing the teachers to create a methodology that they believe works best for their students.” He values the flexibility of the curriculum and the freedom to tailor instruction in a way that meets students’ needs.
His teaching philosophy centers on the belief that all students are capable of learning. “They just need to find the method that works best for them,” he explains. He creates an environment where making mistakes when giving their best effort is acceptable and encouraged as part of the learning process. When students leave his class at the end of the year, they have a mindset of not making excuses for problems, but developing solutions.
Outside of the classroom, Mr. Hui-Peterson enjoys coaching and playing basketball, baseball, and other sports. He’s also an avid traveler, always seeking out new parts of the world to explore.
