Ms. Satir was drawn to BASIS Independent Bothell by its rigorous approach to learning and its high academic standards. Her goal as an educator is to help students become curious, courageous, and self-expressed learners. “My hope for fourth and fifth graders is that they see themselves as competent and confident readers, writers, and speakers,” she says.

She believes students learn best when they can make meaningful and purposeful connections between content and their lived experiences. “Connecting with students on a social-emotional level is key to developing trusting relationships in the classroom,” she explains. “The depth and quality of student-teacher relationships, in turn, motivates individuals to be their best selves.”

A favorite classroom activity from the past year was a four-part procedural writing assignment titled How to Stick to My New Year’s Resolution. Students brainstormed viable goals, outlined steps for success, and published their work alongside festive self-portraits wearing party hats.

Outside of school, Ms. Satir loves to travel. Recent adventures have included a Broadway show and museum visits in New York City and a summer trip to Greece, where she toured the Parthenon and the Cycladic islands of Paros and Naxos.
