Science
Primary Program
Mr. Gilmore earned his Bachelor of Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2002 and his Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2007.
As a Subject Expert Science Teacher for grades 4 and 5, Mr. Gilmore is passionate about helping students understand science as an essential tool for making sense of the world around them. His goal is to teach integrative science that students can apply not only in the classroom, but also to their everyday thinking and problem-solving. He believes that scientific knowledge is interconnected and that students develop a deeper understanding when they can explore ideas through multiple perspectives.
Mr. Gilmore was drawn to BASIS Independent Bothell because of its community of highly motivated and capable Expert Teachers and students. He sees the school as a unique opportunity to provide an advanced education that prepares students to become the next generation of leaders. His teaching approach combines factual knowledge with the history of scientific discovery and creative applications, helping students connect ideas and recall information in meaningful ways.
Mr. Gilmore believes students learn best when they are actively engaged with the material. He works to create opportunities for students to discover what interests and motivates them, using those interests as a pathway to deeper learning. He is especially excited to lead this year’s Science Fair and looks forward to sharing his passion for science with students. With a background in Biochemistry research, he is also particularly excited to guide students through their Biology unit.
Outside of the classroom, Mr. Gilmore enjoys spending time with his twelve-year-old daughter, whom he describes as his “scientist in training.” He also enjoys practicing yoga and cooking.
