Golf Guru: An App to Aid Developing Golfers

Golfing has been a sport since the Middle Ages in Scotland. Since then, golf has evolved into its modern version, a sport played and loved by many both competitively and casually. Currently, golf has been growing faster than ever before due to the age of social media and new playing opportunities. This poses a major issue: accessibility of instruction for new players. Golf is already a very expensive sport, costing hundreds of dollars just to get a set of clubs and instruction starting at hundreds of dollars per lesson. These high costs to get started culls the interest of new players and is therefore unhealthy for the sport. My app aims to alleviate this burden for players as it will provide coaching for free, alleviating many of the costs in the sport. My app will do this by tracking the player’s scores and then providing a roadmap for the player to improve, regardless of their skill level. Beginners will have a special course allowing them to learn the game from the ground up, forming good habits that will keep their interest in golf growing. Intermediates will have the next level courses teaching players the intricacies of the sport and how to formulate great play, turning their interest in the sport to a strong passion for it. Advanced players will have the highest level courses, informing players of the complex strategies required in golf as well as how to execute the highest level play with the end goal of pushing players into the top 1% of the sport.

To kick off the week, I dedicated Monday to making comprehensive notes on app production. I jotted down my ideas, features, and functionalities envisioned for Golf Guru. This step laid the groundwork for the rest of the week, providing a clear direction for development.
With a clear vision in mind, I dove into crafting the structure of the app. I started by outlining the various components and screens the app would consist of. Considering the user flow and navigation, I ensured a seamless experience for future users. By the end of Tuesday, I had a solid framework in place, ready to be fleshed out further.
Building upon the foundation laid on Tuesday, Wednesday was dedicated to finalizing the app structure. I refined any rough edges, tweaked the layout, and ensured everything was cohesive and intuitive. This step was crucial for setting the stage for the next phase of development.
Pseudocode served as a roadmap for the coding journey, guiding me through the implementation of the app's logic. On Thursday, I began translating the app's features and functionalities into pseudocode. Breaking down complex processes into smaller, manageable steps made it easier to tackle during actual coding.
As the week drew to a close, I dedicated Friday to completing the pseudocode. I reviewed and refined each step, ensuring clarity and accuracy. With the pseudocode finalized, I was equipped with a clear plan of action for the upcoming weeks of coding.

The task of adding a score tracking feature in my app using Android Studio was both a challenging and rewarding experience. Here's a brief overview of my adventure and the key takeaways from using Android Studio for app development.

Android Studio, being the official IDE for Android app development, was a natural choice. It offers robust tools, support for Java and Kotlin, and integrates essential Google enhancements and plugins, making it ideal for novice and experienced developers alike.

After installing Android Studio, the next step was planning the score tracking feature. This involved designing a simple, user-friendly interface and preparing a backend to store user data efficiently.

The Layout Editor in Android Studio was instrumental in designing an intuitive UI. I focused on simplicity and ease of use, ensuring that the feature would be practical under various usage scenarios.
