Sports & Athletics
Home of the Red-Tailed Hawks
We are proud to offer a comprehensive sports and athletics program ranging from interscholastic, competitive team sports to individual, movement-based after-school activities. Our approach to athletics promotes healthy competition and empowers students with the discipline, grit, and persistence to become leaders on and off the court. It’s the command of these skills that has led many of our student athletes to victory in a variety of competitions, large and small. We are as proud of our students as athletes as we are of them as scholars. Go, Red-Tailed Hawks!
Sports and Athletics Highlights
Our sports and athletics offerings have grown significantly each year. Some of our league teams participate in the Independent Small Schools Athletic Conference, while others play non-league schedules against local schools. In league sports, we emphasize competing at a high level while prioritizing sportsmanship and teamwork. Our noncompetitive sports focus on participation and skill building. Some may eventually become league sports, depending on participation and availability.

Our Mascot
The Red-Tailed Hawks
Chosen by Our Community
The red-tailed hawk, a species native to Virginia, had already made itself at home on our campus. As BASIS Independent McLean was being developed, a breeding pair of red-tailed hawks became frequent visitors, soaring above the grounds and reminding us of the natural beauty that surrounds our community. Their presence felt like a fitting symbol for a school just beginning its own journey. Red-tailed hawks are known for their keen vision, intelligence, adaptability, and strength, qualities that reflect the kind of students we hope to inspire. They remind us to look closely, think boldly, and embrace challenges.
