Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most common questions about our program. We know that you are bound to have more questions—please contact us. We’re here to help.

What is the minimum age for Early Learning at BASIS Independent McLean?

Students must turn two years old before starting our Early Learning program. Cut-off dates vary by age group. See our Admissions overview for full details.

Is BASIS Independent McLean’s curriculum too challenging for my child? How do I know my child will succeed?

Our curriculum is intentionally challenging because we believe every child is capable of more than they may realize. Students are encouraged to think deeply, ask meaningful questions, and tackle complex ideas with confidence. They don’t do it alone. Every student has access to teacher office hours, peer tutoring (Monday–Friday), and a community of faculty, staff, and families committed to helping them grow. From their very first day, students learn that challenge is paired with support—and that persistence, curiosity, and resilience are just as important as achievement. What extracurricular activities does BASIS Independent McLean offer?

We offer 50+ clubs and organizations spanning sports, music, humanities, academic competition, and science. Offerings are shaped by student interest and teacher expertise. Over 80% of our students take part in extracurricular activities. Explore our full list of sports and athletics and clubs and activities.

Does BASIS Independent McLean offer financial aid?

We don’t currently offer financial aid, but we do offer flexible tuition payment plans: pay in full, in two installments, or across 10 monthly payments.

Does BASIS Independent McLean have a referral program?

Yes. When you refer a new family who enrolls, both families receive a tuition credit at BASIS Independent McLean. Learn more about our referral program.

Are there resources at BASIS Independent McLean for students with special academic needs?

While BASIS Independent McLean does not offer a dedicated special education program, we work closely with families to understand each student’s individual needs. Our school counselor, teachers, and administrators have experience supporting students with appropriate learning accommodations and are committed to helping every student succeed within our academically ambitious program.

Because every child’s situation is unique, we encourage you to contact our Admissions team to discuss your student’s needs and whether BASIS Independent McLean is the right fit.

What’s the difference between BASIS Independent Schools and BASIS Charter Schools?

Both share the same proven educational approach, refined since 1998. BASIS Independent Schools differ in offering a lower student-to-teacher ratio, private campus facilities, and a tuition-based, selective admissions process. Learn more about why families choose BASIS Independent Schools.

What percent of AP® students get AP Scholar with Distinction?

The AP® Scholar with Distinction is an award granted by the College Board to students who score a 3 or higher on at least five separate AP exams and achieve an average score of 3.5 or higher on all AP exams taken throughout their high school career.
