About BASIS Independent Brooklyn
Welcome to BASIS Independent Brooklyn.
We believe education should do more than prepare students for what comes next—it should help them discover who they are, what they love, and all they can become.
We are proud to lead a community where joyful learning and academic excellence go hand in hand. We believe every child is capable of more than they can imagine, and it is our joy to help them discover that potential.
When families ask what makes our school special, our answer is always the same: our people. Here, students are known, challenged, and supported by educators who encourage them to ask bold questions, embrace challenges, and pursue their passions. The result is a community where students develop the confidence and curiosity to thrive.
We invite you to visit our campus and experience what it means to be A School for Fearless Thinkers.
Warmly,
The School
BASIS Independent Brooklyn is where curiosity becomes confidence and capability.
With the creativity and character that students develop, there’s no limit to what they can become. We believe in the power of authentic learning that connects classroom concepts to real-world applications. Inspired by enthusiastic teachers, our students grow through engaging, hands-on experiences that infuse their learning with discovery and delight.
A culture of excellence thrives in a warm, welcoming, and genuine community—a place where every child and every family belongs. Located in downtown Brooklyn, a major transportation hub served by numerous subway lines and the LIRR at nearby Atlantic Terminal, our Lower School (PreK–Grade 2) is directly across from Abolitionist Place Park, giving younger students access to a public green space immediately outside an urban campus. The vibrant neighborhood extends learning beyond the classroom, with nearby access to the New York Transit Museum, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and more. Our Upper School (Grades 3–12) is located in the distinctive Red Hook neighborhood of South Brooklyn. The spacious campus is housed in a large five-story facility amidst a waterfront setting, with views of New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty that underscore striking connections to New York and U.S. history.
Core Values
Our Values
Our students are active participants in shaping the BASIS Independent Brooklyn community, including working together with teachers and administrators to develop shared values for all aspects of our program. These guidelines foster ethical thinking and self-regulation by giving students the opportunity to apply general behavior expectations to a range of situations. Respect is the underlying concept for
The Five Rs: Respect Yourself • Respect Your Classroom • Respect Your Friendships • Respect Your Learning • Respect Your Community.
Respect Yourself
Our team empowers students to advocate for themselves, understand the importance of self-care, understand their feelings, and respect themselves. These topics are discussed across every grade through age-appropriate strategies and workshops.
Respect Your Classroom
The classroom is a student’s habitat; as such, it is critical to create a climate of respect where students feel confident and ready to tackle whatever comes their way. This expectation also ensures students regard their teachers with courtesy and respect.
Respect Your Friendships
An effective support system includes peers as well as teachers and families. Our students support one another through their academic journeys with relationships of equal respect and care.
Respect Your Learning
Our community recognizes and values all phases of the learning process: academics, social growth, emotional perseverance, and communicative progression. When students and teachers alike respect these essential learning elements, progress follows.
Respect Your Community
A respectful community fosters the development and growth necessary for productive actions and satisfying end results. It brings educators, students, and families together to equally contribute to an ultimate shared vision.
