Support For Every Student to Thrive
A great education goes beyond what happens in the classroom. A truly transformative learning environment is about knowing each student well and making sure they have everything they need to flourish. From the academic and social support of our Student Affairs team to essentials like nutritious daily meals, a durable web of deliberate, structured support reflects the care behind our model. The common throughline is a simple, unwavering commitment: to know our students, care for them, challenge them, and give them the tools they need to become confident, capable learners.
A Guidance Team for a Meaningful Academic Journey
Our Student Affairs team, including a Director, Deans, and School Counselor, works collaboratively to enable every student to thrive—partnering with expert teachers to understand how each student learns best and with students to build connections through community experiences. They know students as individuals and serve as steadfast advocates: checking in regularly, following their academic progress, and helping them navigate expectations and challenges with encouragement.
When challenges arise, we see opportunities to grow—identifying learning tools and strategies that make a meaningful difference. From academic organization to prioritization, students partner with this team to learn what they can do differently and how to navigate obstacles with confidence.
Student-Teacher Office Hours
All our teachers hold weekly office hours, ensuring students can connect with them one-on-one or in small groups outside of class. As a dedicated time when students can check in on progress, review assignments or content, work on extra skills, or discuss their next big possibility or idea, these office hours help students direct their own learning and make progress toward their goals.
These office hours are a built-in resource for students who need help or extra practice, or who want to build connections with teachers, self-advocate, and stretch their thinking. Over time, the goal is to teach students to be proactive in asking for guidance, an essential skill for thriving in college and beyond.
Parent Office Hours
All faculty also offer weekly parent office hours, encouraging families to connect with their child’s teachers, ask questions, and gain insight into their progress, engagement, strengths, and areas for continued growth. These conversations can help families and teachers work together to support each student’s growth, academic development and success, and overall experience at school.
School Transportation
We encourage families at both campuses to make use of nearby public transportation options; we offer free or reduced MetroCards for students who plan to use public subways or buses. Our Upper School campus in Red Hook is conveniently located near stops for the B61 and B57, as well as the F and G trains at Smith & 9th Street Station. Our Lower School is located centrally in Downtown Brooklyn near stops for the 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, D, F, G, N, Q, and R trains; the LIRR at Atlantic Terminal; and many MTA bus lines, including the B25, B26, B38, B52, B54, B57, B61, B62, and B67.
Families are also welcome to use CitiBikes, bikes, strollers, skateboards, and scooters. We have storage at both campuses for these modes of transportation.
BASIS Independent Brooklyn offers a “Connector” bus between our locations for families with students at both our Upper and Lower School campuses.
Our fee-based transportation program at the Red Hook campus includes morning and afternoon bus services throughout New York City. Our bus routes attempt to accommodate the majority of students who sign up, and they are carefully planned with each school year. Please inquire directly for more details on our current routes.
Dining Services
BASIS Independent Brooklyn offers a lunch program to students of all ages. We partner with Butter Beans to accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies. Butter Beans offers gluten-free, nut-free, organic, and farm-to-table options.
