What defines a New York accent? One common element is rhoticity: the presence or lack of the “r” sound at the ends of words, like in the pronunciation “New Yawk”. However, some people have stronger or weaker accents; for example, older people usually have stronger ones. This project will address the lack of research about if the strength of New York accent, measured by the amount of rhoticity, correlates with someone’s demographics, like age, ethnicity, and gender. I will study speech data from the CUNY CoNYCE (Corpus of New York City English) to quantitatively measure and compare accents among speakers. This will be used to determine and measure how much New York speech is changing over time and how it’s influenced in different groups.
