- BASIS Independent Advisor: Mr. Brian Rappelfeld
Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour has become a topic of conversation and analysis across the world, sparking debate among superfans and academics. From March to August 2023, Swift traveled to 20 cities across the United States, bringing a dedicated trail of “swifties” behind her and selling out stadiums multiple nights in a row. The tour has become a cultural and economic phenomenon, demonstrating the transformative power of music in building a community that fosters economic growth. Using interview-based qualitative analysis, existing data from organizations such as the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and the U.S. Travel Association, proprietary research through survey-based empirical data collection, and the music analytics site Chartmetric, this research will examine the economic impact of Swift’s record-breaking tour through three focus points: booms Swift spurred in local economies across the U.S. (specifically, Glendale, AZ and Philadelphia), transformations and continuities within the concert/ticketing industry, and the success of Swift’s opening acts. Ultimately, the qualitative and quantitative analysis, summarized in a briefing book, will illuminate how the entertainment industry can stimulate economic growth on local and national scales. What can the highest-grossing tour of all time teach local businesses, industry professionals, and musicians about the power of live events, combined with targeted strategies, in fostering economic growth?
