Week 0: Introductorion

Hello! My name is Fia Galperin. I’ve been at BASIS Independent, Brooklyn, since the 5th grade. My Senior Project aims to demonstrate social media’s negative impact on Gen Z’s ability to converse productively about mental health. I have fallen victim to “doom scrolling” for hours on Instagram and have noticed its impact on my daily life. In recent years, I have stepped away from social media for the most part. Gen Z may talk more openly about mental health, but that in no way means it is being discussed in an accurate, informed, and productive way. I hope to work on-site with someone in the news and media world to gain valuable insights about how people get their information and how social media has changed the way people interact with each other when discussing news. At the end of my project, I hope to produce a pitch deck for a less toxic social media platform that would cut out the divisions created by social media’s use of confirmation bias in their algorithms.
