The global fashion industry is one of the most environmentally damaging industries, contributing significantly to carbon emissions, textile waste, and labor exploitation. While much research focuses on the harmful effects of large fast fashion corporations, less attention has been given to the role of small, independent designers in promoting sustainable alternatives. This project investigates how the sustainable sourcing practices of women-led fashion businesses in Brooklyn influence local consumer purchasing decisions compared to large fast fashion brands. This research will take place through a placement with a women-led fashion designer in Brooklyn. During this experience, I will conduct participant observation to examine how sustainable practices, such as the use of deadstock materials, local manufacturing, and transparent supply chains, are implemented in daily business operations. I will also conduct interviews with designers and gather consumer perspectives through informal conversations and observations within the studio. These findings will be compared with publicly available information about the sustainability practices and marketing strategies of major fast fashion brands. Through this research, I expect to better understand how ethical sourcing and transparency influence customer trust, loyalty, and willingness to pay higher prices. This project is significant because it explores sustainability not only as an environmental issue but also as a matter of consumer behavior and community based economic change, highlighting the potential impact of small, women-led fashion business in shaping more responsible fashion consumption.
