🏛️Earlier this month, the Grade 11 AP World H 🏛️Earlier this month, the Grade 11 AP World History classes visited two of the museums in the Smithsonian network: the National Museum for Asian Art and the National Museum for African Art. Their teacher, Dr. Blaney, worked closely with the museum docents to curate a unique guided tour of their respective collections for our students.

Their trip to these two museums gave our students the opportunity to see the tangible products of the historical events that they are studying in the classroom. In particular, they experienced how cultures and religions adapted and blended as they spread along the old Silk Road routes. It was a fantastic day which allowed our students to personally connect with history! 🌟

Today, We Wear Orange to Stand Against Bullying 🧡

During the Lower School Community Gathering, Ms. Orth, Director of Lower School, read Spookley the Square Pumpkin—a story that reminds us of the importance of embracing each other’s differences. Since the start of October, Ms. Baig, our School Counselor, has prepared stories and activities to help students reflect on empathy and understand how it feels to be bullied.

In picture 9, students placed the same number of pebbles in their shoes as the times they remembered being unkind to others, then walked in them to experience how uncomfortable unkindness can feel.

At BASIS Independent McLean, we take pride in our diverse community. Today, we call on everyone to embrace our differences, take a stand against bullying, and spread kindness through our words and actions.

“The daily interactions within this diverse community remind us that unity is not about neutralizing or erasing the differences around us. True unity comes from respecting and learning from these differences. We strive to cultivate this within our school community through small, everyday actions—listening with care, choosing words that uplift, and reaching out to others.”
— Ms. Baig, School Counselor

In today’s Lower School at BASIS Independent McL In today’s Lower School at BASIS Independent McLean, we celebrated our community heroes by dressing up as our favorite heroes! 🦸‍♀️🦸‍♂️

That’s not all—our students were also visited by firefighters from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department and a Life Safety Education Specialist who presented a fire safety lesson. 🚒🧑‍🚒What a great way to learn about the work of some of our community heroes and how we can all help reduce fire risks in our lives! 💪

Tomorrow is Unity Day—don’t forget to wear orange to support the cause of anti-bullying! 🧡
