Week 4: Update
April 6, 2023
I looked a bit more into the government documents, and it’s kinda crazy how things align with each other. To explain my findings in simple terms: New Confucianism is something necessary for China to develop its current political economy, which is characterized by a market economy and a socialist governing system. The uniqueness of this system is well-known, and I argue the unique Chinese Confucian culture is one of the reasons why China has been able to achieve this structure and, henceforward, achieve its rapid economic growth.
I looked into the archived government document and some autobiographies of senior government officials, and it is apparent that China has been trying to liberalize its economy ever since the Mao Zedong era. Multiple attempts have been met with failure, while the last attempt succeeded. I think New Confucianism played a role in this, and I will try to illustrate my ideas next week. I will dive into some more well-known political economy theories to strengthen my narrative this week.
See you.
