Week 3- Methods Clarification

I wanted to share a bit more about my methodology since I have gotten a couple of comments asking for more detail. I have picked five cartoons: The Jetsons (1962), The Smurfs (1981), Dexter’s Laboratory (1996), The Fairly OddParents (2001), and The Loud House (2016). I felt that these cartoons would help me establish an overtime trend. I picked these by looking up popular kid’s cartoons for each decade.

Watching The Jetsons helped me solidify my coding process. I watched episodes and wrote down what actions female characters were perceived doing. Of those, I jotted down the ones that are perceived as stereotypical for women. Then I went back and tallied up how many times female characters were portrayed doing these behaviors. A single episode of The Jetsons filled up my page. I have gathered overwhelming data of a misogynistic portrayal of female characters.

I will be finishing my data collection this weekend and starting an analysis next week. Thanks for reading!
