Our educators started this week with professional development, showing how important it is to learn even when you are the one doing the teaching!   Ms. Olivia’s training for our Primary instructors focused on fostering healthy emotional development. Using practical strategies that can be integrated into daily interactions with students, educators gained a research-based understanding of how children’s brains develop and how adults can support students in navigating strong emotions and building resilience.   Meanwhile, Middle and High School Subject Expert Teachers (SETs) worked with Visual Arts SET Ms. Dreskin to consider their teaching practice through the lens of an artist. They explored four stages of the artistic process (Connecting, Creating, Presenting, and Responding) and reflected on how these processes can inform their own teaching.    We are proud of how our teachers demonstrate their commitment to educating the whole student by learning from one another and drawing on the expertise of both our School Counselor and Visual Arts faculty!

This past Friday, our Head of School, Dr. Thies, had the special privilege of experiencing a day in the life of a Kindergarten student at BASIS Independent Bellevue!    Dr. Thies was greeted by Ms. Metrick, Ms. Armitage, and many ecstatic kindergarten students as she arrived to spend her full day with the class. Throughout the day, she enjoyed learning about phonograms in literacy, fact families in math, how to work as a team in Engineering, and much more!   In reflecting on her day, Dr. Thies shared, “Kindergarten learning is intentional and so important, but what struck me the most about the day was the fact that I had so much fun! The teachers were exceptional, and my classmates added to the joy of the learning process.”   A huge thank you to Ms. Metrick, Ms. Armitage, and their students for welcoming Dr. Thies into their joyful classroom! #kindergarten #basisindependentbellevue #adayinthelife

Grade 5 students are building skills, confidence, and creative expression at BASIS Independent Bellevue!   In Performing Arts, students practiced reading and interpreting a script before turning their attention to singing. Mr. Brad explained to them the process they will go through to learn a new song: first listening to the track, then singing along with guiding vocals, and finally performing with accompaniment alone. By building skills step by step and revisiting them with increasing independence, students are able to take creative risks while growing more confident in their own abilities. We love witnessing the collaborative relationship between Mr. Christopher and Mr. Brad when it comes to teaching our students how to bring a show to life!
