It’s always exciting to reflect on our students’ incredible journeys. As BASIS Independent Manhattan students settle into the new school year, we’re looking back at the most memorable experiences of their summer: the Project Week international trips to the Galapagos Islands and China.
Each year, Project Week takes place at the end of the school year, providing an opportunity for students to collaborate on multidisciplinary projects and engaging activities or trips, free from the stress of exams or assessments.
A major highlight was an unforgettable journey to China for BASIS Independent Manhattan middle schoolers, and we are pleased to share this recap. The trip brought grade 6 and 7 World History lessons to life, fueling their passion for discovery. Two dedicated chaperones guided the expedition: Ms. Collins, BASIS Independent Brooklyn’s International Student Program Coordinator, and Ms. Ye, a Mandarin Subject Expert Teacher.

Beijing: The Capital of History and Culture
Beijing was the first stop, and in one day, students experienced the rich history and culture. The trip began with a visit to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, the former imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The grandeur and historical significance of these sites were awe-inspiring. The group also visited the Temple of Heaven, where ancient emperors prayed for good harvests, and participated in a unique and enriching tai chi exercise session.
Students marked standing on the Great Wall of China as an unforgettable experience, with breathtaking views. The students also explored the Ming Tombs, the mausoleums of the Ming emperors , and visited the Beijing Zoo to see the adorable pandas. A tour through the traditional Hutong alleyways offered a glimpse into the local Beijing lifestyle, which included visiting a local family.

Xi’an: The Cradle of Chinese Civilization
The group’s next destination was Xi’an, a city steeped in history and culture. They visited the Ancient City Wall and walked along it to take in the views of the city. Another highlight was the Greater Wild Goose Pagoda, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most astounding part of their time in Xi’an was the Terracotta Warriors Museum. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to see the sheer scale and historical significance of the Terracotta Army up close. The Tang Dynasty singing and dancing show was also a delightful cultural experience

Shanghai: The Modern Metropolis
The final stop was Shanghai, where students compared their recent experiences of ancient and historical China with a modern metropolis. The group began with a visit to the classical Chinese Yu Yuan Garden and the famous Jade Buddha Temple. Then, their extensive studies of the Silk Road became real. When visiting a silk factory, they learned about the production process and had the opportunity to purchase silk products. Shanghai’s iconic waterfront, the Bund, offered stunning views of the city’s skyline. They also explored Tian Zi Fang, a trendy cultural district filled with art galleries, cafes, and boutiques. The trip concluded with a Huangpu River cruise in the evening, which provided a breathtaking view of the city’s illuminated skyline.

Throughout the journey, BASIS Independent Manhattan and Brooklyn students demonstrated remarkable maturity and enthusiasm for learning about Chinese culture. Their curiosity and respect for the places they visited made the trip even more meaningful.
