Week 9

In this week, I reviewed projects that would be relevant to my Tuesday meeting with councilmember Alexa Avilés of District 38, which encompasses Red Hook, Sunset Park, Greenwood Heights and portions of Windsor Terrace, Dyker Heights, and Boro Park. I hope to gain a better understanding of the land use situation in District 38 (especially Red Hook) as there is certainly a cause for the rise in buildings such as the Amazon centers around the corner from the school. I primarily intend to discuss the talk of redeveloping Red Hook Terminal by the waterfront, an important container terminal for the city that has declined in use and fallen into disrepair. I also hope understanding local law and the process of passing policy will become less confusing when it is explained to me by a member of the City Council. Some of my potential questions would inquire why Red Hook is suddenly experiencing such an increase in factories and high-end housing, as well as following up on the hearing involving Truck Routes that we both attended.
