Dr. Gutierrez earned his Ph.D. in biology and society and his B.S. in biological sciences, along with a certificate in environmental education, from Arizona State University. For pedagogical experience, Dr. Gutierrez worked as a teaching assistant and instructor for undergraduate and graduate courses in biology, ecology, and ethics while at ASU. His background in K–8 education also includes leading interactive marine science classes at Sea Life Arizona Aquarium.

Dr. Gutierrez chose BASIS Independent Manhattan for its rigorous science curriculum, supportive community of educators, and inquisitive students. As a Subject Expert Teacher, he encourages students to think like scientists while embracing an innovative, interdisciplinary approach to learning.

Outside the classroom, Dr. Gutierrez enjoys spending time with his two cats, exploring nature, reading, writing, playing video games, and watching movies.
