During her time in New York City, she taught fifth-grade humanities at the East Harlem School at Exodus House. Following her graduation, she wrote for Chalkbeat, a non-profit education news organization. However, she missed teaching and decided to return to it.

Ms. Lauten joined BASIS Independent Manhattan as the grade 4–5 English Language Arts Subject Expert Teacher because of the school’s emphasis on warmth, creativity, drive, and precision. Her goal is to foster a love for reading and literature, as well as to develop strong communication skills and command of the English language. Outside of teaching, she enjoys visiting art galleries and museums.
