The trolley problem is a classic moral dilemma that has plagued people around the world from different cultures for centuries. My project designs a moral dilemma in which a subject is prompted to choose between two paths for a train, each containing a certain chance of having some people tied to the tracks, leading to their inevitable death. An example track could have either a 50% chance of 2 people or a 10% chance of 10 people on either track. To put people in this position is to ask them to balance risks of death for seemingly anonymous people. This project will analyze the differences which drive different decision-making patterns, specifically through lenses of gender, age, and socioeconomic status. The purpose of this project is to study the sociology of human ethics using the mechanism of decision making.
