The purpose of my project is to determine the extent to which someone’s mental health may have an impact on whether they use tobacco products. Tobacco product usage is a large issue in our society, as it leads to many health problems and lifelong addictions. Analyzing what entices people to begin usage could help eliminate such problems. If people use tobacco products with the belief that it improves mental health, we could learn how to create change to help those impacted. We could support others by devoting more attention to mental health and creating better mental health resources for society. Through my project, I will research the historical context behind the narratives that the tobacco industry has pushed, such as when they have claimed that tobacco products are not harmful. I’ll also analyze past data showing trends in mental health reports and tobacco product usage throughout Union City and the nation in order to determine a correlation between the two. Additionally, I plan to conduct a survey to determine Union City residents’ opinions on the topic and analyze the data that I gather. I will use all my research to create an informational campaign that counters false narratives from the tobacco industry and warns people of the dangers of tobacco usage.
