Post 9: Carnatic Compositions
May 20, 2023
Hey everyone, and welcome back to another episode of “Divinity through Tamil History”. This episode will again not be another analysis episode, though I do have it compiled in my research paper.
However, I do want to explain why I am ending my process with songs rather than a text like the other 5 books I read. The reason is actually quite simple.
Carnatic Music originates between c. 14th century – 17th century C.E. This s a huge gap from the date of Manimekalai, which is c. 6th century C.E. Thus, readers, and really, I can truly see the maximum capacity of the transition of these Dravidian gods. These songs describe the various Gods and their attributes, and as I analyze these attributes, I am able to see if it truly is similar to the Puranic version of the God, or if it stays true to its original Dravidian version. Thus it is a good end to my series, “Divinity through Tamil History”.
