In many areas around the world, expensive surgical devices are not readily accessible to provide experience to aspiring surgeons. However, novel research has demonstrated the viability of using computer-aided design (CAD) to simulate both surgical procedures and equipment. For this project, I am using CAD software Solid Edge to create a virtual design for the laryngoscope, a tool used in diagnostic and surgical procedures of the throat, and anatomical structures within the throat. Through this senior project, I am modeling both the laryngoscope and the larynx area for 3D printing and expanding the viability of CAD in providing models of surgical instruments to developing countries. Since the laryngoscope is commonly used in various ENT procedures, providing such a model would benefit many people and doctors worldwide.
