Week 11: Thanks For Stopping By!!!
May 19, 2023
“Don’t even mention losing to me. I can’t stand to think of it.” -Bobby Fischer
Well, I guess this is it! Welcome to my last senior project blog!!! I’ve been working on this project for 10 whole weeks (a bit more if you include this week and the time I spent in my CS class). To be honest, I’m pretty happy with the result. I did not expect to have a completely functional project after such a short time. Yes yes, there’s still technically a lot more I can do to make this system even better, but I’ll have the luxury of my free time to work on that.
Anyways, because I showed you my final project already, today will just be more…reflective and contemplative. Let’s quickly talk about the quotes I always start off with. Trust me, it takes me forever each time to choose one that sounds good. I think I even repeated some of the players (but don’t worry, I always make sure to use a different quote, so more wisdom for you!). But hey, overall, those little quotes definitely made my posts look more fancy, right??? :DDD
Future Plans
So, let’s talk about the future of this project. I don’t plan on ending it all right here because there are still some cools things for me to add. First of all, as I mentioned last time, it would be good to have the hand gestures enabled on the Oculus build. Also, I need to set up the passthrough feature for the augmented reality setting. Finally, I think it’s pretty important to add in some AI for the game engine. When chess players analyze games, they often have a computer on that shows the best move in each position. That would be something cool to import into this project. And furthermore, with an AI, players may actually be able to play with a robot, rather than having to play for both sides.
Oh, and this reminds me. Although enabling networking through VR is a rather difficult process (or at least I’ve never tried it before), it would be amazing to allow multiple users to play in the same chess environment. This would allow the training system to be used for so much more, from playing with friends to even taking lessons from professional chess coaches.
And We’re Done!!!
Anyways, those are my plans for later on. I had a lot of fun working on this project, and I’m especially grateful for those who helped me throughout the way. Special thanks for my internal advisor, Ms. Bhattacharya, for helping me stay on schedule with this project and providing me with guidance. Also, I would like to thank my external advisors, You-Jin Kim and Davorin Kuljasevic, for sharing their expertise. And finally, thanks to my friends for their moral support, and special thanks to my parents for a bunch of stuff (like getting that headset for my project!!!).
Of course, to those of you who have been reading my blog, y’all are amazing. Please make sure to come to my presentation tomorrow at 10:30 am. In case you can’t make it though, here is the video!!!
