The movie-making industry is a global and highly competitive field that includes the production and distribution of films. The industry has a long history, with the earliest recorded instance of a projected motion picture in 1895. The industry continues to adapt to the modern changing market and technology, resulting in a dynamic and influential field. The relationship between a movie and its genre is complex and multifaceted. A movie's genre refers to the category or type of film it is. Some examples of genres attributed to films are action, drama, comedy, or horror. These genres are often determined by the film's content, style, and themes. A movie's genre can also be influenced by its marketing and promotion, as studios may use genre labels to attract a specific audience or appeal to certain demographic groups. Moreover, genre can also be a tool for filmmakers to communicate a certain mood, tone, and message to their audience. Understanding a movie's genre can help audiences understand the film's content and anticipate the experience they will have. This study examines the relationship between movie genres/categories and box office ratings in the United States of America and India, two countries with distinct societal cultures. It will analyze the top 50 highest-grossing movies in each country over the last 10 years and note the genres. The study aims to investigate why a country's culture and societal climate may have an influence on their preference for a particular type of movie genre, and how this understanding can be utilized by the movie-making industry.
