AP Research Week 7: Implications Of Research
May 21, 2023
Hello everyone! Although I said the blog has ended on Week 6, I would like to quickly address some implications of my research in this weeks blog.
Firstly, due to the hypothesis being mostly disproved for all environmental factors, genetics could be one of the leading causes that affect the prevalence and onset of myopia in Jewish adolescents. Although genetics was not accounted for in this study, pre-existing research has signified in the past that genetics may play a significant role in the prevalence and development of myopia in adolescents, which can be due to either the parents having myopia or an underlying chromosomal linkage (Jiali Li & Qingjiong Zhang, 2017; Stambolian et al., 2004). Secondly, the results within this paper implies that the development and prevalence of myopia cannot be viewed through a single lens. Refraction of the eye can be influenced by both genetics and environmental factors, as seen in the pre-existing research found within the literature review. However, since this study found no correlation between any of the environmental factors and myopia, this indicates the complex nature of myopia and its potential causes. Although this study implies that participants should be able to view their screens and read books from a close distance, can potentially refrain from going outside, and can eat unhealthy without developing myopia, this study overall shows that myopia has yet to be fully understood, and research within this area of study needs to be continued.
Lastly, the results concluded from this study imply that the prevalence of myopia should not only be tracked during one stage of a person’s adolescent years, which is how this study was conducted, but throughout the entirety of a person’s adolescence and even preadolescence as well. The purpose of utilizing this longitudinal method is to get more of an understanding of myopia’s complex nature and how it develops throughout a long period of time.
That is all for this week’s blog. The next blog will most likely end it all off!
