What happens when some of the world’s leading institutional investors step inside an NYC private school powered by fearless, independent thinking?
On Tuesday, May 19, our Upper School campus in Chelsea had the distinct pleasure of hosting more than 20 representatives from Brookfield Asset Management, led by Chief Financial Officer—and former BASIS Independent Manhattan parent—Hadley Peer Marshall. The visiting team stepped away from their global credit and infrastructure portfolios to get an inside look at our culture of intellectual inquiry. The day was an inspiring intersection of corporate strategy and academic excellence, demonstrating the incredible achievements of students armed with real autonomy. In honor of our guests, our Upper Schoolers dressed in sharp, business-ready attire, prompting a couple of the Brookfield visitors to joke that our grade 11 Young Investors Club founders were wearing the official “Brookfield uniform.” In an endearing nod to academia, the Brookfield team brought their own school spirit, sporting their respective college gear and bringing a delightful warmth to match our campus culture.

The Student Showcase: Proving the Model
Our visitors toured our Chelsea campus and were presented with a tour de force of student-led innovations. Across every division, our student presenters demonstrated exactly why our independent thinkers are ready for the global stage:
- Visual Arts and The Renaissance Mind: Subject Expert Teacher Mr. Steven Smith highlighted the student art works around the atrium, hung up for that week’s Fine Arts Festival. He emphasized how our students apply the same passionate pursuit of the arts as they do to math and science.
- Startups @ Spring Contest: Grade 8 students Kai G. and Kaes Z. presented their award-winning business concept to streamline hospital patient flows using AI-driven consulting frameworks.
- The Senior Project: Senior Zixi Y. stunned the room with a live demonstration of an inverted pendulum machine he designed and programmed himself for his Senior Project. Forged out of pure curiosity to close the sim-to-real gap, Zixi explained how he coded his robot to self-correct against real-world friction.
- Middle School Essay Contest: Ellie A. (Gr. 7) won first place across the entire Spring Education Network with her sophisticated history essay on courage during World War II. She eloquently explained the Siege of Leningrad, noting a connection within her family, and how civilians used culture, education, and ballet to uplift the human spirit during the war.

Wildcats Win the Ultimate Curriculum Quiz
The “Are You Smarter Than a BASIS Independent Student?” Kahoot! quiz was a major highlight of the afternoon. This fast-paced challenge tested the crowd on advanced concepts across physics, chemistry, biology, world history, English grammar, Mandarin, Latin, and advanced mathematics.
The live leaderboard had the entire room buzzing as Brookfield guests jumped up into the top standings alongside our students. After the final question of the friendly competition, our Wildcats secured a clean sweep, taking the top three positions.

A Lasting Imprint
During the final Q&A panel, our grade 11 students impressed the Brookfield representatives with their mature, complex questions about energy portfolio diversification and the real-world applications of AI.
As the event wrapped up, the impact our students made on these seasoned professionals was clear. One associate on the Brookfield team commented:
“Your students are just so incredibly eloquent. Seeing how much the teachers here care about the students and how deeply that attention shines through in their work, it really stays with you. I think we all walked away wishing our own school teachers had paid that much attention to us.”
Bridging the Classroom and the Real World
Reflecting on the day, this visit provided a unique opportunity for our students to gain a firsthand, insider look into the world of global finance.
- Our students gained an insider look into global finance, engaging one-on-one with and asking detailed questions to these industry experts. The visiting associates shared valuable advice on selecting college courses and highlighted the core soft skills—teamwork, professional passion, and an unending sense of curiosity—required to excel in the field.
- Our guests departed deeply impressed by the depth of our accelerated academic program, and discussions are already underway for future collaborative opportunities, including student field trips to Brookfield’s headquarters and potential internship pathways.
At the end of the day, the lifelong love for learning that defines our school is the very tool our students need to navigate the professional world, and we can’t wait to see our Wildcats carry that spirit far beyond our walls.
