- Project Title: An Inquiry into Autism: The Path to a Deeper Understanding of Neurodiversity
- BASIS Independent Advisor: Mr. Betcher
In a neurotypical society, autistic people may have a difficult time both fitting into social groups or living alone. A lot of people on the internet either misrepresent those with autism or convey myths about the condition, spreading misconceptions that negatively impact autistic people. This can make people misunderstand autism, and reinforce the discrimination against autistic people.
In my project, I aim to learn more about autism and utilize my research to reflect on how I view neurodiversity not only in my family but also in today’s society. Through volunteering in a special needs classroom, I will learn more about working with children with special needs and how to assist them in their education. In addition, I will also be conducting research on autism by reading different works on autism over the years and reading memoirs by autistic authors about their experiences in order to better understand the condition and how people viewed it over time. I will be journaling my reflections on my volunteering experience and my research on books on autism throughout the project weeks. Ultimately, I will be combining my volunteering experience with the findings of my research in order to compile a final product that reflects my understanding and views on autism.
