“Everything I Need to Know, I learned from Kindergarten” – Head of School, Dr. Elizabeth Thies

“Everything I Need to Know, I learned from Kindergarten” – Head of School, Dr. Elizabeth Thies

July 16, 2025 by jessicagrear Leave a Comment

BASIS Independent Bellevue Head of School, Dr. Elizabeth Thies

My first experience with our Early Years program took place in Bangkok and it changed my life as an educator, specifically when it came to Kindergarten.  I have always valued the fact that we offer our teachers autonomy when it comes to the implementation of our curriculum.  But, I don’t think that I ever truly understood the value of this process until I watched learning come to life in a plethora of engaging ways for our Kindergarten students.

Our curriculum is written in a way that allows us to build key literacy skills while also focusing on strong math foundations, making scientific discoveries, and learning about historical events.  We incorporate music, art, drama, and engineering as a way to help our students have hands-on experiences and engage different learning styles.  In Kindergarten our kids get to explore, play, pretend, and create in such meaningful ways.  But most of all, that get to have so much fun while doing it.

What I loved the most about this was how much I learned as a school leader.  I realized that the emphasis on fun in Kindergarten was only the beginning.  The idea that we could create real-world and meaningful scenarios to supplement the learning process was one that needed to be shared. Kindergarten is where your child’s education journey will begin with us and what a fun adventure it can be!

As the Head of School at BASIS International School Bangkok, I loved visiting our Kindergarten classrooms and partnering with those teachers to be creative in their approach to the learning process.  While studying medieval times as a part of their History unit, our Kindergarten students participated in a joust tournament.  Who knew that a history lesson could include skateboards and pool noodles in such a meaningful way!  Our Kindergarten students chose their own knight names, they had crests, and even celebrated victory with a family style feast afterwards.  (I feel like it should be noted that no Kinder knights were harmed in the implementation of the learning)

But the learning didn’t stop there.  As an additional part of this unit, our students built catapults in Engineering and tested them by working as teams to test their catapults and destroy an enemy castle.  I will note that this was the first time as a Head of School that I had to dodge marbles that were being propelled as I observed a classroom!    The hazard was worth the reward of watching our young learners be so actively involved in the learning process.

That same year, I got the opportunity to purchase one of my most prized possessions in the Kindergarten Market.  The “streets” of our school library came to life with a variety of vendors selling everything from snacks to rare items.  As a part of this market, our Kindergartners learned to put their math and language skills to work.  I quickly learned not to be fooled by their sweet and smiling faces as they told me that I got a “special deal” as the Head of School.  My experience left me asking the very important question, “What exactly is a fair market price for a genuine dragon egg?”   I was equally concerned when several of them simply avoided my questions about if and when it would hatch.  I am happy to report two things.  The first is that my students did an excellent job calculating the appropriate change, applying discounts, and working on their English speaking skills.  The second is that the same dragon egg still sits in my office (unhatched) as a reminder of how fun it is to be a part of the learning process alongside my students.

eirufgiudfsdjbakjbvkdfvbidfugbiergbiubdkjsbfgdjkhgiuerhiustgdhfkajfkdjsbvlksdbvksdfjbvkgdfjgbiurbiutbwieurfgbiwubfjksb

Being a Head of School with a full Early Years Program made me a better school leader. Getting the opportunity to work alongside creative educators and see all of the ways that learning could come to life in fun and engaging ways allowed me to coach my staff and remind them of the importance of maintaining our rigor while never losing sight of the fact that students make the strongest connections to the material they are being taught when they are immersed in an experience that brings them joy.  My Kindergarten teaching team never missed an opportunity to make a connection, build learning skills, or stand out on our campus.  Even their Halloween costumes were exceptional!

Check out Dr. Thies in a beard!

But, the point of this is to highlight how much I love watching students enter our program and grow as individuals and learners.  This phenomenal teaching and active engagement that ensued served as a constant reminder of the importance of being creative in your approach and helping students build important character traits alongside strong foundational skills.  If only every day could feel as fun and rewarding as a day of learning in a BASIS Independent School Kindergarten classroom.  The lesson that I learned as a Head of School was that everything that I needed to know about building community and the learning process was being beautifully demonstrated in my Kindergarten classrooms.

I am excited about the opportunities that my experience will create when it comes to adding a Kindergarten at BASIS Independent Bellevue.  One of the most exceptional things about our Kindergarten curriculum is that it gives our teachers room to explore imaginative ideas.  Our goal is to combine a child’s natural curiosity with learning outcomes that inspire interest and instill a love of learning.

We want our students to be challenged so we create a learning environment that is exploratory in nature and allows students to arrive at natural conclusions on their own.  Children learn in a variety of ways and, therefore, it is important to create lessons that allow them to learn and explore.  I love watching my Thai students develop and grow over the course of the year and can’t wait to work with our future Kindergarten teachers to make learning just as meaningful and fun!

What to Expect at your In-Person Play Date: Fall 2026 Admissions

July 16, 2025 by mallorykilbreath Leave a Comment

At BASIS Independent Bothell, we seek applicants who have an interest in learning at an international level, a desire to contribute, a willingness to work hard, and an ambition to join a collaborative, supportive, and joyful community of peers, Learning Expert Teachers, and Subject Expert Teachers. Our Kindergarten and Grade 1 applicants will participate in an in-person playdate with our renowned Early Learning Expert Teachers as an integral part of the application process.

What is the in-Person Play Date?

The play-based assessment provides our teachers, administrators, and admissions staff with the opportunity to get to know your child and observe your child’s social-emotional and academic development in a classroom setting.

The Play Date will take place at our brand-new campus in Bothell.

Play Dates last approximately 30 minutes and feature time for our teacher or administrator to get to know your child in a small group with a few age-appropriate lessons and activities.

Who is required to attend the Play Date?

Every applying Kindergarten and Grade 1 student will be required to attend a Play Date. The adult (a parent, guardian, caregiver, or family member) with the student will NOT be authorized to participate in the Play Date with the student. Adults may wait in our waiting area on campus with our admissions team for the duration of the event. Our playground will be open to use for those with additional children not partaking in the Play Date.

When does the Play Date have to take place?

We are offering Play Dates on November 8, 2025, at 10 AM and 11 AM, December 2, 2025, at 5 PM and 6 PM, and January 24, 2026, at 10 AM and 11 AM. We strongly recommend arriving 15 minutes early to check-in. The Play Dates will start promptly at the start time. Late entries will not be admitted and will have to be rescheduled.

How do we register for a Play Date?

Once you have submitted your application, you will be prompted to schedule your Play Date.

If you’re not ready to choose a date and time when you apply, you can always log back in at a later date and choose one that is convenient.

What if my child doesn’t know all the answers?

That’s ok! We are meeting with them to gauge where they are socially, emotionally, and academically. We know and understand that not all students are in the same place.

What if my child doesn’t speak English?

While we understand not all students will be proficient in English, we are looking for more than a beginner level of English fluency. Students should be able to answer questions from the host about themselves, numbers, colors, a book or toy, etc. in English. The host should not have to speak slowly or repeat themselves for the child to understand.

What if my child doesn’t do well due to unforeseen circumstances?

We know children don’t always have good days, a good night’s sleep, their tummy hurts, they are overly shy – we understand all these things.

It is the right of the Admissions Office to reschedule if we feel it is necessary. However, we will not offer to reschedule if the adult feels the child did not do well or their best. As this is an assessment, only one opportunity for the assessment is allowed.

Will we know the results of the Play Date?

No, we do not share assessment results with applicants or parents.

We look forward to meeting your student(s) at their Play Date!

Fall 2026: What to Expect at Your Virtual Family Meeting

July 14, 2025 by jessicagrear Leave a Comment

At BASIS Independent Bellevue, we seek applicants who have an interest in learning at an international level, a desire to make a contribution, a willingness to work hard, and an ambition to join a collaborative, supportive, and joyful community of peers, Learning Expert Teachers, and Subject Expert Teachers. Be ready to participate in a culture where academics are encouraged, learning is celebrated, and students have fun! In order to both ensure student success and manage the popularity of our program, admissions is a selective process.

What is the Virtual Family Meeting?
The Virtual Family Meeting is an essential part of the admissions process at BASIS Independent Bellevue and is part of our final admissions decision. This 20-30 minute meeting is the school’s opportunity to learn more about your child and your family’s interest in our school.

While we are happy to answer questions about our program, the Family Meeting is not intended to be the first time families learn about our offerings. Prior to the Virtual Family Meeting, we strongly encourage families to visit our website and blog, attend an Admissions Event, or speak with a member of the Admissions Team.

When are the meetings held?
Virtual Family Meetings are typically Tuesday – Thursday from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM every 30 minutes.

Who is required to attend the Virtual Family Meeting?
For families applying to Kindergarten through Grade 1, at least one parent or guardian is required to attend the meeting, while the child is not required to attend.

For families applying to Grade 2 through Grade 9, at least one parent or guardian is required to attend the meeting with your child. If your child does not attend, you will be asked to reschedule.

What if we are applying for more than one student?
If you have more than one child applying for admission, your family will only need to attend one Family Meeting. All applicants (grade 2-9) should be in attendance for the meeting.

When does the meeting have to take place?
Families must first apply before scheduling their Virtual Family Meeting. The Virtual Family Meeting must be completed before receiving an admissions decision.

How do we register for a Virtual Family Meeting?
Once you have submitted your application, you will be prompted to schedule your Virtual Family Meeting in your application portal. We recommend signing up early to ensure you are able to secure your slot – they tend to fill up as the cycle progresses!

If you’re not ready to choose a date and time when you apply, you can always log back in at a later date and choose one that is convenient. We recommend signing up early to ensure you are able to secure your spot.

How long is the Virtual Family Meeting?
Virtual Family Meetings are generally 20 – 30 minutes long. Oftentimes, those hosting the Virtual Family Meeting will have back-to-back appointments and will be unable to go over the 30-minute mark.

Who will we be meeting with?
Our Virtual Family Meetings are hosted by members of the Admissions Team or a member of our school Administration.

What questions will we be asked?
The meeting is our chance to get to know you and your child more in a one-on-one setting. We may ask you questions about why you’re interested in our program, your child’s academic and non-academic interests, and even what they like to do with their free time.

We discourage any formal interview prep, as it tends to make students more nervous when we are just trying to get to know them. We want all students to feel comfortable and be themselves.

How will the Virtual Family Meeting be held?
You will receive a reminder email 24 hours before your meeting time with a Zoom link to your virtual meeting. When your meeting time arrives, please log in to your meeting via Zoom.

Can we ask questions at the end?
If there is time, yes! But always note who you are speaking to. Whoever hosts your meeting will always introduce themselves and let you know their role at the school. If their role is not in relation to your question, they will let you know, and encourage you to reach out to the Admissions Team for an answer.

We look forward to meeting you and your student(s) soon at your Virtual Family Meeting!

If you have any questions, email us at blv.admissions@basisindependent.com.

Fall 2026: What to Expect at Your In-Person Entrance Exam

July 14, 2025 by jessicagrear Leave a Comment

At BASIS Independent Bellevue, we seek applicants who have an interest in learning at an international level, a desire to make a contribution, a willingness to work hard, and an ambition to join a collaborative, supportive, and joyful community of peers, Learning Expert Teachers, and Subject Expert Teachers. Be ready to participate in a culture where academics are encouraged, learning is celebrated, and students have fun! In order to both ensure student success and manage the popularity of our program, admissions is a selective process.

What is the Entrance Exam?
The Entrance Exam is part of the admissions process for students applying for Grades 2 – 9 for fall 2026. Its results show us concepts understood, and concepts not yet understood for the grade level they are applying for. All applicants will take this exam created by BASIS Independent Schools.

How will your Entrance Exam be conducted this year?
Entrance Exams will be conducted in person and at the BASIS Independent Bellevue Campus this admissions season.

What is a passing score on the Entrance Exam?
This exam is not a pass or fail. Because the exam is diagnostic in nature, we consider it to be just one part of our comprehensive admissions process along with all the other application requirements.

Each applicant is allowed to take the exam once.

How will I learn the results of the Entrance Exam?
We do not share exam results with applicants or parents.

Do you require students to take the ISEE or other similar outside exams? Do you accept these scores?
We do not require the ISEE, HSPT, or SSAT, nor will the Admissions Team accept or review these scores.

All Grades 2 – 9 applicants are required to take the BASIS Independent Schools Entrance Exam.

What is on the Entrance Exam?
Our Entrance Exam covers three topics: math, English/Language Arts, and writing. The content of these exams is based on the foundational material needed for the grade students are applying for.

  • Math: Students will be presented with a set of open-ended math questions based on their incoming grade level and the BASIS Independent Schools program. Exam length: 30 minutes.
  • English/Language Arts: Students will be presented with reading comprehension and grammar multiple-choice questions. Students will read short passages and then answer questions to test their comprehension, as well as their knowledge of words in context, literary devices, etc. Students will also be presented with grammar questions that will ask them to correct sentences or identify parts of speech. Exam length: 30 minutes.
  • Writing: Students will be presented with an essay prompt and asked to write a response. Exam length: 30 minutes.

How long does the Entrance Exam take?
In total, we ask for families to allow two hours. The exam is self-paced, but students have up to 30 minutes for each topic. These two hours will allow enough time for the proctor to take attendance, read the instructions, and for all students to complete all three parts of the exam.

We commonly find Middle and High School applicants take the full two hours, but for Grade 5 and below it can vary from 45 minutes to an hour and a half.

How should my student prepare academically for the exam?
Preparation is not necessary. We want students to focus on their current academics at their current school, and not study for or stress over an exam they will never know the results of.

The exam is used by the Admissions Team and Head of School to find out where your student is, academically speaking. As BASIS Independent Schools offers an advanced curriculum, it is completely normal for your child to encounter some challenging or unknown concepts on our exam.

What should my student bring to the exam?
Students are not required to bring their own materials, the Admissions Team will provide all the writing materials they will need. Students are also welcome to bring a water bottle, but it cannot be a glass bottle. We do not allow food in our classrooms.

Cell phones, calculators, rulers, and smartwatches are not allowed.

When should we arrive on campus for the exam?
The campus will open 30 minutes before the exam start time, 9:30 AM. All exams will begin promptly at 10:00 AM. We will have a closed campus once the exam begins and will not allow late students to join. If students arrive after 9:55 AM, they will not be able to participate in the exam and will have to reschedule.

Families are encouraged to arrive by 9:45 AM at the latest to allow enough time to park, check-in, and have their students led to their assigned classrooms.

What should parents do while their child takes the exam?
Parents will be able to wait in the campus parking lot for the duration of the exam but will not be permitted to wait inside the campus lobby or outside the classrooms. Parents are able to leave campus to grab a coffee or run a quick errand, but we would not advise leaving for more than 30 – 45 minutes.

A classroom will not be dismissed until all students have completed all three sections of the exam, or their allotted time has run out, but as mentioned above this total time can vary by grade.

How do I sign up for an exam?
Once you have submitted your application, you will be prompted to schedule your Entrance Exam in your application portal.

If you are not ready to choose a date and time when you apply, you can always log back in at a later date and choose one that is convenient.

When are the In-Person Entrance Exam dates?
Sunday, December 7, 2025
Sunday, February 1, 2026

If you have any questions, email us at blv.admissions@basisindependent.com.

Be ready to participate in a culture where academics are encouraged, learning is celebrated, and students have fun! In order to both ensure student success and manage the popularity of our program, admissions is a selective process.

The play-based assessment provides our administrators and admissions staff the opportunity to get to know your child and observe your child’s social-emotional and academic development in a one-on-one setting.

The virtual assessment will take place in the comfort of your own home and we request that you have a few materials available for your child to use during the duration of the Play Date.

Play Dates generally last 30 minutes and feature time for our administrator to get to know your child and conduct age-appropriate activities.

What materials should be brought to the Play Date?
Your child should be comfortable and sitting in a chair at a table. Please have these materials ready for your child:

  • A recently created piece of artwork
  • Several sheets of paper
  • Writing or drawing utensils (crayons / color pencils / markers / pencil)

When are the Play Dates held?
Play Dates are held virtually Monday – Friday, as early as 9:00 AM and as late as 2:00 PM, for 30-minute periods.

Who is required to attend the Play Date?
One adult (a parent, guardian, caregiver, or family member) is required to be present, but this person is expected to only provide technical support as needed. We hope to interact with your child independently of the adult.

We ask that the adult in the room sit behind and to the side of the child so that our teacher or administrator may be able to effectively conduct this assessment without adult interference.

How do we register for a Play Date?
Once you have submitted your application, you will be prompted to schedule your Play Date.

If you’re not ready to choose a date and time, you can always log back in at a later date and choose one that is convenient. Please note: As we get closer to the Completion Deadline, there are fewer meeting times available. We would suggest scheduling one as soon as you are able.

How will the Play Date be held?
You will receive a reminder email 24 hours before your meeting time with a Zoom link to your Virtual Play Date. When your meeting time arrives, please log in to your meeting via Zoom.

What if my child doesn’t do well due to unforeseen circumstances?
We know children don’t always have good days, a good night’s sleep, their tummy hurts, they are overly shy – we understand all these things.

It is the right of the Admissions Office to reschedule if we feel it is necessary, however, we will not offer to reschedule if the adult feels the child did not do well or their best. As this is an assessment, only one opportunity for the assessment is allowed.

Admissions Process

Step 1: Attend an Admissions Event (Optional)

Though not required, we strongly recommend you attend one of our Admissions Events to learn about our program before applying. We offer both in-person Open House events and Virtual Information Sessions.

To view our upcoming Admissions Events, click here.

Step 2: Submit an Online Application

You will submit an application with general student information through the online platform Ravenna. This will officially start the application process! After your application is processed, you will be able to send Teacher Recommendation Forms, Transcript Request Forms, and schedule your Student Evaluation and Family Meeting.

Please note: Steps 3, 4, 5, and 6 can be done in any order, but must be completed after the application is submitted and before a family is issued an admissions decision.

Step 3: Teacher Recommendations (Kindergarten-Grade 1 optional, Grade 2-9 required)*

You will be able to provide the recommendations directly to your child’s current teacher. We do not accept recommendations from past teachers, only current ones. As listed in the instructions of the recommendations, we do not accept documents from parents. All recommendations must be sent from the teacher to the Admissions Office directly. This process is best done directly through our application tool, as parents can easily request a link sent directly to their child’s current teacher through Ravenna.

*We understand some schools do not allow their teachers to write recommendations for students that are leaving their program. In these circumstances, the requirement can be waived.

Step 4: Transcripts

You will be able to submit a Transcript Request Form directly to your child’s school* after submitting your application. This form requests your child’s current school send us a current-year report, along with the last two years. As listed in the instructions of the request form, we do not accept documents from parents. All transcripts must be sent from the school to the Admissions Office directly.

*If your child has been enrolled in more than one school district, you may need to submit this form more than once.

Step 5: Student Evaluation

Students will register for a BASIS Independent Schools Virtual Play Date (Kindergarten-grade 1) or In-Person Entrance Exam (grades 2 – 9). These evaluations allows us to meet and interact with your child and determine if they are ready – academically, socially, and emotionally – to join our program in the grade for which they are applying.

Step 6: Virtual Family Meeting

At least one parent or guardian is required to attend this 20-30 minute Virtual Family Meeting. Students applying for grades 2-9 are required to attend. This meeting is a chance for us to meet your family, and your student, and learn a bit more about them in a personalized setting.

Once all supplementary materials are received and required meetings are attended, your application is complete!

If you have any questions, please contact us at blv.admissions@basisindependent.com.

Leading by Example: Associate Head of Upper School Honored as a Rising Star in Education

July 11, 2025 by christineklayman Leave a Comment

At BASIS Independent Manhattan, we believe that inspired leadership fuels inspired learning. We are proud to celebrate our Associate Head of Upper School (grades 6–12, Ms. Jennifer Dickens, who has been recognized as one of The Rising Star Women Leaders in Education for 2025 by Women We Admire. This national recognition celebrates women shaping the future of education through innovation, collaboration, and vision—qualities Ms. Dickens embodies every day at our NYC private school.

Ms. Dickens joined our school community as a history teacher, where she quickly distinguished herself not only for her dynamic classroom instruction but for her unwavering commitment to students’ growth and well-being. As she moved into administrative leadership, she carried with her a deep understanding of what it means to be both an educator and a mentor.

“I am so proud that Ms. Dickens’ leadership is not only being recognized internally, but externally,” said Ms. LaNette Hodge, Head of School. “She has a rare gift for inspiring those around her to be their very best, whether they are students in her classroom or colleagues across our campus.”

Her impact is evident in every corner of our school. Whether she is leading professional development sessions on effective classroom management inspired by Teach Like a Champion, organizing icebreakers to build camaraderie among faculty, or simply recognizing a teacher’s effort with a thoughtful shout-out or a surprise treat in the staff lounge, Ms. Dickens has created a culture where every member of our community feels valued and supported.

Ms. Friederike Williams, Dean of Students for our Upper School and a longtime colleague of Ms. Dickens, shared:

“I had the privilege of teaching alongside Ms. Dickens, and I believe she made me a better teacher. I benefited from her expertise and insight while she was my teacher mentor, especially by acquiring new methods for lesson planning structure. She also showed me how reflection on this process would help me find the best way to present content for my students.”

Ms. Dickens is not only a leader in her field but also an innovator. In November, she will attend a national education conference and present her insights in a session, “From Chalkboards to Chatbots: Rethinking AI in Middle Level Education.” Her work explores how artificial intelligence can be leveraged to empower students, personalize learning, and prepare young people for a world that is rapidly evolving.

This award from Women We Admire reinforces what our community already knows: that Ms. Dickens is a dedicated and visionary leader. She reminds us that true leadership is not about titles or accolades—it is about showing up for others, listening with empathy, and never losing sight of why we do this work in the first place.

Please join us in congratulating Ms. Dickens on this well-deserved honor. We are excited to watch her continue to lead, inspire, and redefine what is possible in education.

Class of 2025: Graduation Reflections

July 10, 2025 by jogoldfarb Leave a Comment

On June 18th, family, faculty, and students of BASIS Independent Brooklyn gathered together at the Palm House in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden to celebrate the accomplishments of our Class of 2025. Our twenty-four graduates are now poised to continue their academic careers in top colleges and universities across the country.

During the ceremony, Valedictorian Maxim S. expertly captured their time together as a class and inspired his fellow graduates to look ahead to all that is in store for them. We wanted to share his speech with our community since his words reflected the joy and honor at the heart of the celebration.

Address by Class of 2025 Valedictorian Maxim S.

Hello everyone, and thank you all for coming to celebrate this long-awaited achievement. It is an honor to stand on this stage as valedictorian—an honor I couldn’t have achieved without the unwavering support of my teachers, administrators, and, of course, my family.

Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt—thank you for not only giving me the opportunities to succeed, but for being there through all my highs and lows. And a special thank you to my brother as well—although he’s not here today, I truly cannot imagine how dull life would have been without your company, snarky humor, and competitiveness.

For most of us, today marks the long-awaited moment of liberation. The words AP, College Board, and Advisory are finally behind us. No more watching AP Classroom videos at 2x speed, hiding from Advisory teachers in the Senior Lounge, or complaining to our teachers about unnecessary post-AP assignments. I’ll admit, I certainly felt that sense of freedom at Senior Send-Off—more excited about what’s to come than nostalgic for what had passed.

But over the course of this last trimester—with more free time and fewer deadlines—I’ve had space to reflect and genuinely appreciate what BASIS [Independent Brooklyn] as given us.

Like many of you, I joined this school in its early days. When my family moved to the United States in the middle of my 2nd-grade year, I was nervous. I didn’t know how I’d fit in, or whether my differences would set me apart. But BASIS [Independent Brooklyn] did something remarkable—it welcomed me with open arms. It embraced the things that made me unique and gave me the space to grow into who I am today.

This small community—quirky, intense, tight-knit—has encouraged us to be ourselves. Class presentations and projects gave us the creative liberty to explore our topics of interest deeper. And because our class was so small, we had no choice but to listen to each other—to hear perspectives we might have tuned out in a more traditional high school. That closeness made us not just classmates, but collaborators, confidants, and, in many cases, lifelong friends.

We felt this school was small enough to create the changes we wanted—and so we did. We argued our case for better grades after tests we thought were unfair, started clubs where we saw gaps in the extracurricular catalog, and pitched in to support both the BASIS [Independent] and Red Hook communities. Sure, some of our efforts didn’t succeed—like the infamous Puerto Rico trip—but every attempt taught us how to advocate for ourselves, speak up, and shape the environment around us.

Through these four years, there were obviously moments when I wasn’t always the most prideful about our school. I sometimes compared our experience to the more “traditional” high schools we see in movies, and wondered what we were missing. But now, I see just how special our journey has been. We weren’t just students here. We were contributors to something still being built, persevering through academic rigor to help leave a mark on the expanding BASIS [Independent Brooklyn] community. And because of that, we didn’t just grow—we helped shape the school that shaped us.

So to the Class of 2025: As we turn the page and begin the next chapter, let’s not forget the laughter, the lessons, and the late nights that brought us to this stage. Let’s carry forward the values BASIS [Independent Brooklyn] has instilled in us—the courage to be ourselves, the willingness to listen, and the strength to grow. So let’s not wait for the world to change—let us be the ones who change it.

Congratulations, Class of 2025.  And in the words of Fabrizio Romano: Here we go!

Thank you to Maxim and our entire Class of 2025 for leaving their mark on our school community! We will be cheering you on these next few months during the transition to college.

July 2, 2025 by aixuanwang Leave a Comment

Peru, a megadiverse country, is home to a wide range of habitats, breathtaking natural landscapes, and a rich cultural and historical heritage. This June, as warm winds swept across the stone walls of Machu Picchu, our Red-Tailed Hawks set off from BASIS Independent McLean for a journey they’ll never forget.

Led by Biology teacher Dr. Isquith and French teacher Madame Seye, the group embarked on an eye-opening adventure through Peru’s most iconic sites. Here, Dr. Isquith reflects on the experience:

“Our trip to Peru was an unforgettable adventure filled with rich history and breathtaking landscapes.”

Day 7-8: Lake Titicaca, Uros Islands & Taquile Island

“We concluded our trip at Lake Titicaca—the highest navigable lake in the world—where we engaged with the warm and welcoming people of the Uros Islands. We learned about their unique customs and connected with local children. It was truly a fantastic trip!”

Indeed, it was a fantastic trip. These Project Week trips expanded our students’ learning to a global scale, encouraging them to become curious, collaborative learners and team players. They reflected on classroom knowledge while absorbing new insights in real-world settings.

At over 14,000 feet above sea level, students pause for a group photo at La Raya Pass, surrounded by snow-capped Andes. This scenic spot marks the high point between Cusco and Puno.

Project Week is a BASIS Independent Schools tradition in which students work with dedicated faculty on multidisciplinary projects or international trips during the final week of the academic year. Through these diverse experiences, students broaden their interests, embrace new challenges, and gain invaluable skills through cooperation, exploration, and hands-on learning.

Stay tuned for more reports on the international trips!

Celebrating Young Authors: BASIS Independent Fremont’s 3rd Annual Creative Writing Competition

July 1, 2025 by sarahpeterson Leave a Comment

At BASIS Independent Fremont, we believe in nurturing creativity just as much as academic excellence. A highlight of student life at our Lower School is the Creative Writing Competition, now in its third year.  This year, we’re especially excited to showcase the voices behind the stories—literally. Each of our winning authors recorded a reading of their work, bringing their characters and historical journeys to life in their own words.

Open to all students in grades 4 and 5, the contest offers young writers an opportunity to share their voices, hone their craft, and be recognized for their storytelling talents. The prompt invited students to imagine a time traveler who experiences a historical event or moment in time, and how that experience changes them. Students responded with a wide range of creative, heartfelt, and thought-provoking stories.

Entries were judged by a panel that included Upper School English teachers, high school Creative Writing students, and local author Krystaelynne Sanders Diggs. Ms. Diggs—a published author, speaker, and advocate for children’s voices in literature—brought her expertise and passion for storytelling to the judging process.

We are proud to introduce the three winners of this year’s contest, each honored in a specific award category. Read on to meet each writer, discover what made their story stand out, and hear them share their work aloud in the videos below. From strong character arcs to inventive ideas and beautifully descriptive language, these young writers impressed us all—and we think they’ll impress you, too.

Best Character Development: Arya S. (Grade 5) – “In Memory of Papouli“

Arya impressed the judges with a compelling protagonist whose emotional growth unfolds beautifully over the course of “In Memory of Papouli”. Her ability to build a believable and dynamic character stood out in a field of strong contenders.

Watch Arya read her story below:

Most Original: Arjun M. (Grade 4) – “The Old Way Forward – A Time Traveler’s Tale“

Arjun’s story, “The Old Way Forward – A Time Traveler’s Tale”, took a wonderfully imaginative approach to the prompt, offering a fresh twist on time travel that surprised and delighted our judges. His creativity and risk-taking paid off in a story that felt entirely his own.

Watch Arjun read his story below:

Most Descriptive: Yunxi X. (Grade 4) – “Through the Tube of Time“

With vivid language and detailed imagery, Yunxi transported readers into the heart of “Through the Tube of Time”. Her descriptions made scenes come alive, immersing the reader in every sound, smell, and sight.

Watch Yunxi read her story below:

BASIS Independent Fremont’s Creative Writing Competition is just one of the many ways our Humanities Program fosters a love of storytelling and self-expression. Arya, Arjun, and Yunxi’s work showcases the creativity, imagination, and talent that thrive in our classrooms. We hope their accomplishments inspire others to find their voice and explore their own creative journeys at BASIS Independent Fremont and beyond.
