Join Us for Our January Open Houses at BASIS Independent Silicon Valley

A great way for prospective families to experience BASIS Independent Silicon Valley is by attending one of our upcoming Open House events. With opportunities to visit both our Lower School and Upper School campuses, families can explore our learning environments, meet members of our community, and gain a deeper understanding of our academic program.

Open Houses are designed to offer a full, immersive overview of the BASIS Independent experience. Participants will have the opportunity to tour our campus, meet school leadership, students, parents, and connect with our Learning and Subject Expert Teachers across varying grades and disciplines as they share their vision of the student learning experience. Prospective students are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Lower School Open House

BASIS Independent Silicon Valley – Sunnyvale Campus

Our Lower School Open House is designed for families interested in Transitional Kindergarten through Grade 5 and offers a structured opportunity to learn more about our academic approach and campus community.

Please note that the campus will be closed from 11:00–11:30 AM for lunch, and families should plan to attend one of the two session times listed above.

During the Open House, families will tour the campus, meet administrators and teachers, and learn how our two-teacher model supports students’ academic growth across disciplines. You’ll also hear how we foster curiosity, independence, and a love of learning in our youngest learners. Upon arrival, families should check in at the campus entrance to sign in and receive event materials. We recommend reviewing the campus map in advance to help guide your visit. Students are encouraged to attend with their families, and parents are asked to remain responsible for their children at all times while on campus.

Upper School Open House

BASIS Independent Silicon Valley – San Jose Campus

Families interested in Grades 6–9 are invited to join us for our Upper School Open House at our San Jose campus. This open-format event allows families to explore our campus at their own pace.

The campus will be open for the full three-hour window, and families are welcome to arrive at any time. Most visitors spend approximately 30 minutes to an hour on campus during their visit.

Our Winter Open House Has SNOW Much to Experience!

On Saturday, January 24, BASIS Independent McLean (BIM) will open our doors and warmly welcome you to our Winter Open House! 

Open House is the best way to learn about our advanced curriculum, discover our talented subject expert teachers, and meet our dynamic students and parents.

Open House Structure: 

Doors open at 8:40, and our program will begin promptly at 9:00 AM. Please review the section below for your child’s grade of interest. Students are encouraged to join us as well. 
 
Toddler–Kindergarten (The Early Learning Program) 
Program Time: 9:00 AM–10:45 AM 

Visit our Early Learning Program (ELP), where our youngest students learn and grow. Hear from Early Learning Expert Teachers, administrators, and parents as you learn how BIM fosters curiosity, exploration, and creativity. ELP families are encouraged to stay for a campus tour at the conclusion of the program. 
 
Grades 1–4 (The Primary Program) 
Program Time: 9:00 AM–10:45 AM 

Visit with our Learning Expert and Subject Expect Teachers, where you will learn about our unique two-teacher model. From math and science to humanities, Mandarin, the arts, engineering, and more, hear about our focus on teaching students how to learn and how we spark a lifelong love of learning. 
 
Following the program, Primary families are encouraged to stay for a campus tour. 

Grades 5–8 (The Middle School Program) 
Program Time: 9:00 AM–11:00 AM 

In the Middle School Program, we focus on developing the academic, executive functioning, and self-advocacy skills needed for success in the high school years. Hear from our Subject Expert Teachers about how they inspire excellence, and from our students who address questions about a day in the life of a Red-Tailed Hawk. Plus, learn about the many athletic and academic competition teams, student clubs, and international trips. Student Ambassadors will also be leading campus tours, giving visitors the opportunity to get a feel for our dynamic learning environment. 
 
Grades 9 and Above (The High School Program) 
Program Time: 9:00 AM–11:00 AM 

Educating tomorrow’s great innovators, pioneers, and thought leaders requires a well-rounded curriculum—one with breadth and depth across academic disciplines. The High School Program is designed to allow you the opportunity to meet students, faculty, and administrators as you and your child learn about high school at BIM, including our unique Senior Year. The High School Program will conclude with a Networking Mixer with our Student Ambassadors, teachers, and school leadership.  Visitors will also have the opportunity to tour our campus, led by our Student Ambassadors, for a first-hand look at our labs and learning spaces.

1. What are the school drop-off and dismissal times?

Our campus opens at 7:00 AM with a free Early Bird Program before classes. Dismissal runs from 3:20–4:20 PM, and Late Bird after-school care is available until 6:00 PM.

2. What activities and clubs do you offer?

Learning at BASIS Independent Bothell doesn’t end when the school day does. Students can participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including robotics, chess, speech & debate, art & music, coding, and athletics. Whether your child is passionate about STEM, performing arts, athletics, or discovering new interests, our programs provide meaningful opportunities to grow, explore, and connect.

3. Do you have a preschool program?

At this time, BASIS Independent Bothell serves Kindergarten through Grade 12. Students entering Kindergarten must be 5 years old by September 30 of the year they enroll.

4. What is the student-teacher ratio?

Kindergarten classes have about 20 students with an Early Learning Teacher and an Early Learning Teaching Fellow. Grades 1–4 average 25 students with a Learning Expert Teacher (LET) and Subject Expert Teachers (SETs) for each subject. Grades 5–12 also average 25 students per class with a Subject Expert Teacher. This structure allows students to build relationships with teachers while benefiting from experts in every subject area.

5. How do you support new student transitions?

Transitioning to a new school, especially one with a rigorous academic program, can feel overwhelming. We provide support every step of the way through daily guidance from Learning Expert Teachers, advisory programs for older grades, academic support during Student Hours, and family communication through Parent Hours. Our Dean, Student Affairs Director, and School Counselor provide emotional and social support to ensure every student feels confident and prepared.

Parent Perspectives Shared at Our Fall Open House

At BASIS Independent Brooklyn’s recent Open House, several parents spoke on a panel about what drew them to our school and what stands out most based on their years in our community. We wanted to capture the conversation to help others understand what makes our school stand apart. Many thanks to all our parents for sharing their experiences!

Paul C. (Dad to Jasper in Gr. 10)

We were talking to one of my wife’s aunts, who lives in Arizona, and she told us that they’re building a BASIS [Independent] School in Brooklyn, and she told us that we needed to do whatever we could to get our kid into it. She’s an educator in Arizona, so she was very familiar with the BASIS Curriculum. That’s why we came to the school and took the tour, and it was so inspirational. Literally, my wife was crying because it just felt like this is what we’re looking for.

This school has a reputation for being a really challenging school. However, the truth is, in our experience – and it’s been about 10 years now – that BASIS [Independent Brooklyn] is going to make your kid a better student, no matter what their capabilities are. That’s what’s most important.

The other thing that I loved in this whole process and journey, are the relationships that my son has developed with the teachers along the way. They talk about classes; they talk about movies and more. He’s leaned into a lot of different and varying interests here. I think that is possible when you are at a school that has a smaller student body. The school and the teachers You’re able to have a more meaningful relationship with the students and nurture their interests.

My daughter, Sonia, started here in third grade, so this is her fourth year at Basis. Our family is very happy with Basis.  When we started looking at schools, we were looking at different public and private schools. My husband was very keen on BASIS Independent Brooklyn. He’s an engineer by background. So, he was looking for a rigorous STEM education. I was a little bit skeptical because I wanted a more well-rounded, and I thought BASIS [Independent Brooklyn] might be too STEM-heavy.

 We’ve been really impressed with the breadth of the curriculum.   For example, Basis offers classes in creative writing, philosophy, drama, music, and choir. The administration has been building out its sports program as well. In fourth grade, the kids put on a school play – Alice in Wonderland, and it was amazing. It was so impressive. The students even designed the props, and the acting was great. My daughter loves her creative writing class. So, I think it’s a very well-rounded education.

Ralf S. (Dad to Frankie in Gr. 5 and Alba in Gr. 7):

I’m the very lucky father of two daughters here at BASIS Independent Brooklyn. Frankie is a fifth grader, and it’s her eighth year at the school. Alba is a seventh grader, and it’s her tenth year at BASIS Independent Brooklyn. We came to the school for many of the same reasons as the other parents mentioned. In 2014, there was a newspaper article about a new school in Brooklyn with a world-class learning culture and high-level education that combines that with the joy of learning. It sounded great on paper because that’s a virtuous circle: The more they learn, the more they enjoy learning, the more they learn. It’s just this positive upwards spiral, and that’s definitely been proven to be so over the past 10 years.

Let me just pick a couple of specific reasons why we love the school.

One, my daughters learn a lot overall, but they also learn how to learn. And that’s almost more important to me than any specific subject matter. For example, they learn about time management and organizational skills. It is so important that they learn how to organize themselves, how to communicate, and how to deal with “struggle”. These kids have the skills to learn.

Second, we love that the school normalizes failure. I actually think BASIS [Independent Brooklyn] is a super nurturing school. If you look up the word nurturing in the dictionary, it says that it means “to help somebody develop and succeed.” And that’s exactly what the school and the teachers do.

As mentioned, one example is to normalize failure. For example, in science, let’s say you have a project to build a bridge, you build your project while working with your team. Then let’s say the bridge doesn’t hold the weight that you wanted it to hold. Okay, that’s fine. You deal with it. You talk to your classmates. You talk to teachers, you go to student hours, and you just try again. It’s okay to fail. And then you pick yourself up and try again.

In my opinion, one of the most important things to succeed in life is developing resilience and grit and never giving up. And BASIS [Independent Brooklyn] kids have an abundance of that because they’ve just learned this throughout their classes. I think it’s much better to have these experiences and to learn skills dealing with failure now rather than when you’re going into college.

Rajashree C. (Mom to Leandra in Gr. 5):

My daughter has been at BASIS [Independent Brooklyn] from Kindergarten. Now she is in fifth grade, so we are entering middle school. We have a lot of respect for how they manage the transition from primary to middle school. This year, we’re really navigating what it means to not have what they call a Learning Expert Teacher. Students navigate classes of their own, move from one class to another. A couple of weeks ago I came in for the Meet the Teacher Night, and sometimes I’m surprised by all my daughter learning. I went home, and I asked her, “Do you feel like this is okay?” And she responds very confidently, “Yeah, it’s fine.” And this is how it’s been. It’s been an evolution.

Whatever level your students are at, based on my experience, BASIS [Independent Brooklyn] will help your students grow and be more responsible for their own journey and their own sort of pathways. That’s what’s been most interesting to me – how Leandra has grown.

Subject Expert Spotlight: How Dr. C Redefines Biology at Our NYC Private School

At BASIS Independent Manhattan, our passionate Subject Expert Teachers (SET) are the secret ingredient to delivering our advanced curriculum in an engaging way, helping students take intellectual risks and make real-world connections outside of the classroom.

This month, we spotlight Dr. Chubaryov (Dr. C), our Biology SET at the Upper School in Chelsea, who teaches AP and Honors Biology in addition to AP Environmental Science to our high school students. After reading about her approach in the classroom and what makes her one of the best teachers in Manhattan, come and see for yourself at one of our Fall Open Houses.

The Spark: From Opera to Observation

In August, Dr. C balanced a full life that brought huge changes at the start of this school year: she graduated from her PhD program at NYU and got married. Yet, her focus remains on the students. Dr. C’s own passion for biology was ignited in high school by an amazing teacher who made the subject exciting—even “cool.” A fond memory that sticks with her is how her biology teacher would play opera music while instructing the class on how to do dissections. This mix of creativity and deep study informs her teaching today.

Thinking Like a Scientist: Beyond Memorization

Once in high school at BASIS Independent Manhattan, students have already completed three years of physics, biology, and chemistry. With this preparation and budding passion for biology, Dr. C can immediately help grow her students’ intellectual curiosity. She also challenges them to take risks that go beyond just learning biology, helping them feel confident to “do biology.”

From NYU PhD to Chelsea Classroom

To enable her students to be active participants, Dr. C emphasizes that they are scientists in training. She often brings her doctoral research into the classroom, sharing personal anecdotes about her work in the NYU lab studying Hirschsprung Disease. These stories help her students connect abstract concepts – like cellular signaling or genetics – and their real-world applications. Dr. C notes that this is when she really sees her students thinking like scientists: reasoning through how biological systems interact and discovering both the beauty and relevance of biology in everyday life.

A Nurturing Academic Environment

When asked about their teacher, students immediately get wide-eyed and say she is great because of her duality. Dr. C’s teaching style is direct, but it is constantly peppered with personal anecdotes about her PhD studies that bring the subject to life. Students also appreciate how she holds them accountable, but does so by consistently performing “checks for understanding” to ensure every student feels supported. This exemplifies the nurturing academic environment at BASIS Independent Manhattan, where students feel inspired to safely take intellectual risks and achieve their highest potential.

Our November Open Houses are the perfect opportunity to discover our campuses in person, learn about our world-class, advanced BASIS Curriculum, and participate in live mini-classroom demonstrations with our talented and dedicated Learning and Subject Expert Teachers. Your students will have plenty of fun to enjoy, too! As always, students are welcome and encouraged to attend our Open Houses.

In addition, the best way to learn about a school is through the unfiltered perspectives of current parents and students. We provide a panel of student and parent ambassadors for you to hear from directly about their BASIS Independent Manhattan experience. Bring your top questions.

What will a BASIS Independent Manhattan Open House look like?

Doors will open at 9:30 AM, and we encourage families to arrive as close to this time as possible. There will be light refreshments and an opportunity to mingle with our Wildcat Student Ambassadors, Parent Ambassadors, and staff. The event will begin promptly at 10:00 AM (but if you have to arrive later, that is totally fine. We would rather you join us!).

Following a welcome from our leadership, all attendees will receive a schedule tailored to the grade level of interest. Then you will head off to see mini and interactive demonstrations led by our teachers. You will step inside the classrooms to see them come alive. Simultaneously, there will be rooms where you can ask questions and hear about the student experience directly from current families. This portion of the program will continue until 12:00 PM, and we hope that you can stay for the entirety of the event to take full advantage of the experience and leave with a complete understanding of our school, the curriculum, culture, and community.
