Meet Our New Subject Expert Teacher: Teacher Danae

February 20, 2026 by mirandamartinez Leave a Comment

Teacher Danae earned an Honors B.A. in English from the University of South Florida, where some of their favorite courses included Early Childhood Literature, Comics, and Short Fiction. Their passion for education grew while working as an Instructional Aide supporting students with autism who communicate using AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication). This experience deepened their understanding of the diverse ways students learn and how to meet individual needs to support student success.

Teacher Danae first joined BASIS Independent Schools as a Subject Expert Art Teacher at the Fremont campus. During the COVID-19 distance learning period, they successfully navigated the challenges of remote instruction while maintaining student engagement, creativity, and meaningful artistic expression without traditional in-person interaction.

Teacher Danae later transitioned into the role of Dean of Students for TK – grade 5, where they supported students’ social-emotional development, test anxiety, and executive functioning skills. In this role, Teacher Danae provided individualized tools, accommodations, and a nurturing environment to help students grow both academically and personally. They eventually returned to the classroom as the Middle and High School Subject Expert Art Teacher.

Through these diverse experiences, Teacher Danae has developed a deep understanding that while self-expression and communication take many forms, the desire to be seen, heard, and understood is a universal and powerful driver of learning.

“I teach art to give students the skills and confidence to use all the tools in their toolbelts to share their thoughts and feelings with the world. Learning new techniques and mediums of self-expression is a catalyst that guides students as they hone lifelong skills like risk-taking, problem-solving, accountability, dedication, and self-confidence. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to teach students these skills at BASIS Independent Dublin, and I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues to build strong foundations for these students to become well-rounded, thoughtful, and compassionate life-long learners in our dynamic and ever-changing world.” Teacher Danae is proud to be a founding member of BASIS Independent Dublin.

Are there any highlights you’d like to share about your teaching philosophy or approach?

My approach to teaching is student-centered and interest-driven. This looks like aligning the content of time-periods, regions, artists, and mediums with concepts students are learning in their English, history, and science classes. This cross-curricular lens fosters a deeper understanding across all subjects and the connections they are able to organically make. Once we cover the art movements, key artists, techniques, and mediums relevant to our lesson, students engage in thoughtful planning and conceptualization in a written and illustrated pre-assessment, allowing us to discuss and fine-tune their visions before they bring them to life.

What are some of the most rewarding parts of being a Subject Expert Teacher and working with BASIS Independent Schools students?

For me, one of the most rewarding parts of being a Subject Expert Teacher and working with BASIS Independent students is the freedom I am given in content development, allowing me to tailor the BASIS Curriculum to serve student needs and interests. The sense of community that is fostered from the top down, starting with our incredibly caring and devoted leadership team, makes it easy to carry out my vision in the classroom. Working alongside passionate teachers who are experts in their field, and students who are driven by their curiosity and eagerness to learn and solve challenges head-on, is another significant part of what keeps me invested and excited about working at BASIS Independent Schools. The bridge between school staff members and families is always open, and something that I feel is a major stand-out from all of the other schools I have worked at.

Are there any thoughts that you’d like to share with families who are joining – or who are thinking of joining – the BASIS Independent Dublin community?

If you are looking to join a community shaped by educators driven to support students to strive to be the very best they can be, while providing them with all the tools, supports, and genuine care they need to achieve their potential, then you’ve come to the right place. The founding Subject Expert Teachers and administrators I have had the pleasure of working with for years are eager to bring our expertise and the heart of what has made our programs so successful at other schools in our network. I look forward to building upon our legacy and writing the next chapter at BASIS Independent Dublin with you all!

Meet Our New Subject Expert Teacher: Ms. Ilona Covert

February 19, 2026 by mirandamartinez Leave a Comment

Ms. Covert holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from UC Davis and a Master’s Degree in Bioanalytical and Physical Chemistry from the University of the Pacific. She spent nearly a decade in the industry as a leader in her field, serving as a senior scientist and laboratory manager in Global Agriculture, before returning to academia.

As an educator with experience teaching at the university level, Ms. Covert has seen many bright students struggle with college-level materials, unprepared for the rigors of undergraduate education, and strive to live up to their full potential. This experience set her on the path to improve the education of our younger generations, to help better prepare them for college. According to Ms. Covert, the best way to minimize this gap is to intercede with our learners during their pivotal years. Combining her experiences in both universities and as an industry leader allows Ms. Covert to drive these students to succeed in their future goals as the “movers and shakers of their generation.” Ms. Covert first joined BASIS Independent Schools as a Subject Expert Chemistry Teacher at Fremont Upper School.

“Paul Brandt once said, ‘don’t tell me the sky’s the limit when there are footprints on the moon.’ Our students are incredibly bright and curious. They deserve the opportunity to excel, but they cannot do it alone.” Says Ms. Covert on her teaching philosophy. “It is on us, as educators, to help propel those young minds on a course of knowledge, curiosity, and success. If we can provide the tools and help them connect their real-life experiences to what they are learning, there is no stopping them.” Ms. Covert is proud to be a founding member of BASIS Independent Dublin.

Ms. Covert loves to read, play video games, and spend quality time with her husband and daughter.

What excites you most about helping build a brand-new school from the ground up?

I am very excited for the opportunity to join the BASIS Independent Dublin founding faculty. I look forward to contributing to the development of the school’s academic vision and culture from its very beginning. Being part of the creation of a brand-new school is incredibly exciting and will be deeply rewarding.

How does your background in the industry influence the way you teach and connect with students?

In addition to my teaching career, I spent more than seven years as a senior scientist and laboratory manager with Kraft Heinz’s Heinz Seed division.

My time in industry has a huge impact on how I teach and how I connect with students. Working as a senior scientist and laboratory manager showed me what science looks like outside of a classroom – how experiments are designed to solve real problems, how teamwork matters, and how persistence is just as important as intelligence. I bring those experiences into my lessons by sharing real-world examples, explaining how the concepts we study are actually used, and helping students see that what they’re learning has purpose beyond a test or a grade.

Because I’ve worked both in industry and in schools, I can relate to students who are still figuring out what they want to do. I talk openly about different career paths, the skills that matter most, like communication, problem-solving, and curiosity, and how mistakes are part of the process. My goal is to make science feel relevant, approachable, and exciting, and to help students see themselves as capable thinkers who could one day be the scientists, engineers, or innovators solving real-world challenges.

What lessons from BASIS Independent Fremont will you carry into this new role?

While I am enthusiastic about this new chapter, I acknowledge that leaving BASIS Independent Fremont was a very difficult decision. I have had the privilege of working alongside an exceptional group of colleagues and teaching truly remarkable students. Change is really hard, but it can also be an opportunity. That’s what I’m taking into this new role – change is hard but good. Change allows us to grow.

Meet Our New Front Office Coordinator: Ms. Carolinna Dievendorf

February 17, 2026 by mirandamartinez Leave a Comment

Ms. Carolinna joined the BASIS Independent Schools community in 2024 as Campus Assistant at the Fremont Upper School campus, where she quickly established herself as a trusted presence among students and families. Recognizing her strengths in community engagement and operational excellence, she advanced to Front Office Coordinator, a role in which she has become instrumental to the school’s daily success. Ms. Carolinna has streamlined key processes, launched innovative student initiatives that enhance campus culture, and serves as a valued mentor to students. Ms. Carolinna is proud to be a founding member of BASIS Independent Dublin.

Outside of school, Ms. Carolinna enjoys spending time with her husband and puppy, and creating handmade crafts. Her intricate crochet work has become a beloved feature of campus life—displayed in the Front Office and awarded as coveted prizes in school competitions.

What inspired you to work in schools, and what drew you to the BASIS Independent Dublin community?

I was inspired to work in schools after working at a math and language tutoring center. I loved getting to know the children and seeing them learn and progress in their educational goals. I’ve been working at BASIS Independent Fremont for the last year, and I’ve loved every minute. When I saw that BASIS Independent Dublin will be opening soon, I saw it as an opportunity to help create a community as wonderful as this one.

What does a typical day look like for you on campus?

A typical day at the front office starts with greeting students as they make their way into school. There are many things that need to be done as the day continues, such as signing in students that are late, talking to parents on the phone about absences or any questions they may have, and restocking supplies for the classrooms. I also enjoy decorating the school and creating games to engage with the students, so I spend the free time I have working on those.

What are you most excited about in your role at a new school?

I’m most excited about getting to know the families and students. Creating a welcoming atmosphere is very important to me, so I hope to create that at BASIS Independent Dublin.

February 6, 2026 by mirandamartinez Leave a Comment

Mr. Danny has been a valued member of the BASIS Independent Schools community since 2022, growing each year in his role and deepening his impact on the school’s day-to-day operations.

Known for his thoughtful approach and commitment to excellence, Mr. Danny enjoys working alongside a dedicated team and being part of a community that prioritizes kindness, growth, and achievement. He plays a key role in ensuring the school runs smoothly, always with an eye toward collaboration and continuous improvement. He is excited to continue fostering a culture of vulnerability, teamwork, and shared success as a founding member of BASIS Independent Dublin.

Outside of his work on campus, Mr. Danny has recently developed a passion for sewing and karaoke—creative hobbies that reflect his dynamic personality and appreciation for learning new things.

What inspired you to work in schools, and what drew you to the BASIS Independent Dublin community?

I am inspired to work in schools because it allows me to stay meaningfully connected with students and families while contributing to growth in both large and small ways. I am especially motivated when my work brings a sense of purpose through reducing operational roadblocks and supporting the success of others alongside me. I was drawn to the Dublin community because I want to be part of creating an organizational culture from the ground up, and I am really excited by the opportunity to be a part of a founding team!

What does a typical day look like for you on campus?

A typical day as an Operations Manager is never the same; however, it involves balancing urgent needs with longer-term tasks that keep daily school operations running smoothly. My role often includes ordering and restocking supplies, organizing and coordinating safety drills, assisting with student dismissal, finding small ways to build team morale, and more! The best parts of my day are when I get to learn something new about my colleagues or students, and when I feel genuinely connected to our campus community.

What’s one thing families might not realize goes into keeping a school running smoothly?

One thing families might not realize is how much collaboration and community play a role in keeping a school running smoothly. Teamwork, mutual respect, and shared responsibility allow the campus to function smoothly and consistently. I’ve valued working with supportive leadership and kindhearted colleagues within the BASIS Independent Schools community, and I look forward to the same in the Dublin community.

What are you most excited about in your role at a new school?

I am most excited about helping create systems and best practices that contribute to smooth daily operations, so that students, families, and staff can focus on learning. I’m also looking forward to getting to know the new facilities and ensuring we stay proactive with maintenance and preventative care. Most of all, I’m excited to meet and work alongside my new colleagues and to contribute to a supportive, collaborative campus culture.

Meet Our New Subject Expert Teacher: Ms. Nasira Shahin

February 4, 2026 by mirandamartinez Leave a Comment

Ms. Shahin holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Osmania University, India, and a master’s degree in Computer Science from San José State University. She began her career as a software engineer, where she discovered that her true passion lay not in writing code alone, but in teaching others how to think. This realization led her to the classroom, where she has dedicated herself to empowering students to become confident, critical thinkers and creative problem solvers. With over 14 years of teaching experience, Ms. Shahin has taught computer science, logic, mathematics, and economics at leading private schools across the Bay Area.

Ms. Shahin first joined BASIS Independent Schools as a Subject Expert Computer Science Teacher at Fremont Upper School in 2020. Her classrooms are known for intellectual rigor, thoughtful questioning, and an atmosphere that encourages curiosity and bold thinking. Ms. Shahin believes that computer science and mathematics are fundamentally about logic and problem-solving. She challenges students to engage deeply with complex ideas, approach problems from multiple angles, and grow comfortable thinking beyond conventional boundaries. “I hold myself and my students to a high standard,” she says. “My goal is to spark curiosity and keep it running at full throttle.” Her teaching philosophy is grounded in a genuine love of learning and the belief that curiosity is the foundation of a meaningful education.

Ms. Shahin has taught a range of advanced mathematics and computer science courses, including AP Computer Science A, AP Computer Science Principles, and Introduction to Programming. She also designed and launched a capstone course, Data Structures & Algorithms, which exposes students to college-level computational thinking and problem-solving. The course serves as a critical foundation for fields such as operating systems, compiler design, graphics, computer networks, robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cybersecurity. By engaging with these advanced concepts early, her students enter college exceptionally well prepared.

Ms. Shahin finds great joy in guiding students through challenging material and witnessing their intellectual growth. “What I value most is being around young minds. My students constantly challenge me, inspire me, and remind me why teaching is such a privilege,” she reflects. Her former students have gone on to study computer science at top institutions, including MIT, Carnegie Mellon University, Caltech, UC Berkeley, and UC San Diego, among others. Ms. Shahin is proud to be a founding member of BASIS Independent Dublin.

Outside the classroom, Ms. Shahin enjoys hiking, road trips, and spending time with family and friends, and she never turns down a good TV show.

Are there any highlights you’d like to share about your teaching philosophy or approach?
My teaching philosophy centers on guiding students through a cohesive learning journey in which each concept is intentionally built and connected. Lessons are carefully curated to help students develop confidence and deeply understand the what, why, and how behind their work. Through inquiry-based learning, I continuously assess student understanding, adapt instruction to meet individual needs, and reinforce proper terminology, problem-solving strategies, and computational thinking skills.

Project-based learning is a core component of my approach. In courses such as AP Computer Science Principles and Data Structures & Algorithms, students progress from the ideation phase to the development of a concrete, functional product. Throughout this process, they engage in meaningful peer collaboration, produce high-quality documentation, and practice clearly explaining and justifying their code. This approach supports both technical mastery and long-term growth as independent, thoughtful problem solvers.

What are some of the most rewarding parts of being a Subject Expert Teacher and working with BASIS Independent Schools students?
Being a Subject Expert Teacher is most rewarding when I see students truly excel in the fields I’ve taught them in. It’s deeply fulfilling to watch students take the foundation built in my classroom and apply it far beyond the course, whether that means excelling academically, pursuing ambitious projects, or entering competitive fields with confidence. Over the years, I’ve had students go on to work in Silicon Valley at companies such as Google and Microsoft, found well-funded startups, gained recognition at national conferences, and even published papers. Witnessing their growth and knowing I played a part in preparing them for these achievements is incredibly gratifying. BASIS Independent students are in a league of their own. Their curiosity, enthusiasm, and drive make every lesson dynamic, and it’s exciting to see them achieve so much even before graduating high school.

Are there any thoughts that you’d like to share with families who are joining – or who are thinking of joining – the BASIS Independent Dublin community?
If you want holistic learning where teachers are invested in student success, this is the place to be. BASIS Independent Schools foster strong, respectful relationships between teachers and students, which allow for high expectations, mutual trust, and genuine mentorship. This is an environment where motivated students can truly thrive.

Meet Our New Director of Student Affairs: Teacher Jasica Gill

February 3, 2026 by mirandamartinez Leave a Comment

In 2017, Teacher Jasica received their Bachelor of Arts in English from UC Berkeley. After graduating from UCB, Teacher Jasica dove into the world of private tutoring and leading small writing classes at tutoring centers around Fremont. Eventually, they went on to work at Morgan Autism Center in San Jose before moving on to work as the middle school English and History teacher at New Horizons School in Fremont. In 2021, Teacher Jasica continued their academic journey and received a master’s in teaching from the University of San Francisco. Their unique graduate program focuses on teaching through the lens of social justice and equity, something that has lent itself wonderfully to their current role as the Director of Student Affairs.

Through their graduate school experience, Teacher Jasica solidified their teaching philosophy, which is grounded in culturally responsive teaching (CRT). In addition to being effective in the classroom, this framework contributes to the approaches Teacher Jasica takes in planning and executing effective SEL sessions through the Student Affairs department that allow students to grow holistically. Because culturally responsive teaching is rooted in the idea that all students bring their unique experiences and strengths to each situation, it allows Teacher Jasica to meet each student where they’re at and use their own strengths to fill in the gaps that emerge.

Music is also an integral part of Teacher Jasica’s day-to-day life, and they love finding ways to incorporate music into their classroom as well. They are thankful for their journey as an educator at BASIS Independent Schools so far, as they have made their way from Subject Expert Teacher to Teacher Mentor, to Director of Student Affairs. Throughout all these roles, one aspect has remained the same: Teacher Jasica’s eagerness to continue growing in and alongside this community of students and educators. Teacher Jasica is proud to be a founding member of BASIS Independent Dublin.

Aside from teaching, Teacher Jasica enjoys being with their friends, going to concerts and art museums, writing, community organizing, and spending time with their cats.

What inspired you to work in schools, and what drew you to the BASIS Independent Dublin community?

Education wasn’t always something that served me well as a student, especially during K-12. The gaps I noticed in my early education drove me to figure out how I could make a difference from within. Through working as a tutor at Ohlone College’s English Learning Center in my early teens, I had the opportunity to work with students with varied learning strengths and challenges. Through this work, I found that I had a special knack for making learning accessible to people. As I progressed through my Master’s in Teaching program at the University of San Francisco, this desire to help all learners reach their highest potential, especially in their most trying times, was cemented even more. This same desire has drawn me to Dublin, a campus where a dedicated group of people is setting out to create a community of learners who can uphold excellence and compassion as they eventually venture out of the classroom and into the world. It isn’t every day that one gets to be part of the initial culture creation at a place that will undoubtedly go on to positively change a community and its members. The challenge of troubleshooting issues that are inevitable during the beginning stages of getting a school off the ground is exciting for me, as I know my prior experience will allow me to help create a strong foundation.

What does a typical day look like for you on campus?

Currently, a typical day on campus starts with me arriving at least an hour before students so I can focus on administrative tasks such as responding to emails, looking at data to inform student intervention plans, and making a to-do list of the students I need to check in with for the day. My day truly begins when students arrive, and I can greet them in the morning to make sure they know that we are happy to have them with us. The bulk of my day is spent interacting with students who come to my office for various reasons. Some students come by because they need a place to regulate themselves, some come for academic support, and many come because they need help working through a problem. Regardless of the reason they arrive, it is my goal to make sure that they leave with a sense of being cared for and knowing that whatever they need is actively being addressed and will eventually be resolved. When I’m not in the office with a student, I like to make it a point to be out at homeroom time, lunch, and in the hallways during passing period to make my presence felt throughout the day. It’s important for me to be a consistent part of students’ days, so they know that even when they are having a day that feels out of control, the support I provide will always remain intact.

How would you describe your approach to student support and engagement?

My approach to student support is based on a combination of data-driven intervention and culturally responsive teaching. Through analyzing the data from a student’s performance on assignments and assessments, I’m able to pull from my years of teaching experience on how to best respond to their unique needs. Whether they need more scaffolding, help with executive function habits, or social-emotional learning support, the goal remains to meet each student where they are to help guide them to where they can be. My approach to engaging students is rooted in making authenticity the cornerstone of all my interactions. Through my years of working in education, I have found that students are not looking for a “friend” or “equal” in their teachers and school staff; they are looking for someone consistent, honest, and who provides concrete support. The best way to provide students with the type of support they are seeking is by dialoguing with them and being transparent about the goals you have for them while constructively highlighting their current areas of growth. The last step to successful student support in intervention is bringing it back to the data by helping students track their own growth while working with them. When students can see their successes reflected in the work they are doing with you, it allows them to not just use a tool once but to make it a part of their toolbox for future use.

What are you most excited about in your role at a new school?

I am most excited about meeting all the students and seeing how an entire community can come together to create something special. I am looking forward to creating new traditions and struggling through problems together. The foundation of any place determines its long-term success, and I am beyond thrilled to be contributing to a foundation rooted in creating a learning experience that goes beyond rigor and extends into students developing a love and joy for learning.

Meet Our New Subject Expert Teacher: Mr. Scott Dievendorf

January 30, 2026 by mirandamartinez Leave a Comment

Mr. Dievendorf earned his BA in English Literature with a Creative Writing Emphasis from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and an MFA in Fiction Writing from Columbia University. He spent the majority of his career at the college level, where he taught composition, literature, and creative writing. Beyond the classroom, he served as the Fiction Editor of Apogee Journal and helped run the Hudson Valley Writers’ Center in Sleepy Hollow, NY.

Mr. Dievendorf first joined BASIS Independent Schools as a Subject Expert English Teacher at Fremont Upper School. His teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that writing and literature have the power to transform the way students see themselves and the world. Literary studies encourage students to engage with nuance, abstraction, complexity, and imagination. Through the work of analysis, they learn to uncover layers of meaning and, as writers, develop the ability to organize their thoughts, hone their voice, and create meaning of their own. They gain critical and creative thinking skills to more deeply explore the world around them and discover their place in it. His goal is to inspire students to appreciate what Language Arts has to offer and to use it as a tool to better themselves. Mr. Dievendorf is proud to be a founding member of BASIS Independent Dublin.

In addition to teaching, Mr. Dievendorf loves reading and writing fiction and is a compulsive book collector. He enjoys running around with his dog, testing out recipes, and trying to learn a new language.

Are there any highlights you’d like to share about your teaching philosophy or approach?

I treat literature as a gateway to explore the broader world, and writing and analysis as navigation tools. My students learn that a text is conceptually rich and invites them to consider the social, cultural, and historical context that shaped it. Our work encourages critical and creative thinking, venturing through layers of meaning, bridging seemingly disparate ideas, and mapping out new intellectual discoveries. Ultimately, I see our coursework as essential to my students’ success across disciplines by preparing them to think critically and communicate effectively.

What are some of the most rewarding parts of being a Subject Expert Teacher and working with BASIS Independent Schools students?

BASIS Independent Schools maintains a rare balance between teacher independence and student rigor. I deeply value how much the school trusts its Subject Expert Teachers to develop their own independent resources and lesson plans. This, paired with its culture of rigor and achievement through the BASIS Curriculum, inspires genuine curiosity and academic engagement. It leads to a dedicated collegiate classroom community strengthened by collaboration, intellectual inquiry, and passion. I am consistently impressed by how well my students meet the demands of university-level coursework.

Are there any thoughts that you’d like to share with families who are joining – or who are thinking of joining – the BASIS Independent Dublin community?

From my perspective, BASIS Independent Dublin offers a unique and invaluable opportunity. Its founding leaders have brought together some of the most talented and thoughtful educators I’ve met to build an academic program and vibrant culture from the ground up. This founding team will lay the foundation for an extraordinary school, and its early families will be essential to that process. I’m looking forward to seeing our academic community grow.

Leadership Spotlight: Lower School Dean of Students Dylan Burgett

January 27, 2026 by jogoldfarb Leave a Comment

Our Early Learning Program at BASIS Independent Brooklyn is designed to build foundational skills while nurturing a love of learning. From PreK and Kindergarten, then moving into our Primary Program in Grades 1-2 at our Lower School, we aim to create a balance between a child’s natural tendencies and intentional academic learning. Critical to supporting that balance is the work of our Student Affairs team.

Today, we are proud to feature our new Dean of Students at our Lower School, Dylan Burgett. Mr. Burgett moved from Florida to join our community, and he is excited to focus on student support and social-emotional growth during these formative early years. Mr. Burgett serves as the primary student support contact, supporting teachers to help students both individually and in group activities, such as Lunch Bunch meetups.

Mr. Burgett brings years of experience as both a school administrator and an educator. Most recently, he served as Dean of Students at Forest City Elementary School in Florida, where he focused on social-emotional development of students in collaboration with teachers and parents, student mentorship, and differentiation of instruction to suit different learning styles.

Before assuming the Dean of Students role, Mr. Burgett was in the classroom as a Gr. 4 lead teacher for two years, supporting students with diverse learning needs. He developed and implemented standards-aligned and data-informed curriculum to support student learning and growth. Dean Burgett graduated from the University of Central Florida with a degree in elementary education.

What is a typical day for you as Dean of Students at the Lower School?

A typical day for me is all about making sure students feel excited, supported, and engaged throughout the school day. I spend time moving through classrooms, checking in with students and teachers to see how their day is going, how they’re feeling, and what support they might need. That support can look different depending on the moment; it can vary from working one-on-one with a student during a math lesson to connecting with students in a more relaxed setting, like a relationship-building Lunch Bunch with them and their friends.

You just joined our school and moved to New York! Can you share where you were before and what you were doing before?

Prior to relocating to New York City, I served as the Dean of Students at a school of over 700 students in Orlando, Florida. Over the course of several years, I grew within the school community—beginning as a Gr. 4 teacher, then serving as the Gr. 4 team leader, and eventually transitioning into the role of Dean of Students, a position I held for multiple years. During this time, I worked closely with colleagues to create and support a variety of social clubs and curricular initiatives that enriched the student experience. I am truly excited about the opportunity to bring this experience, creativity, and passion for student engagement to BASIS Independent Brooklyn.

What drew you to BASIS Independent Brooklyn’s Lower School?

I was drawn to BASIS Independent Brooklyn Lower School for many reasons, particularly its commitment to not only exceptional academic growth but also the social-emotional development of every student. The school’s culture is truly outstanding—one that is positive, supportive, and deeply focused on helping each student succeed. This aligns closely with my own passion for fostering empathy, understanding, and respect, and for helping students carry these values with them throughout their lives.

You have been a big proponent of social-emotional learning and programming for students. Can you tell us some of the ways you hope to bring your expertise in the area to benefit students in these early years?

Social-emotional learning is a vital component of a child’s overall development. It supports students in understanding their own emotions, developing appropriate responses, and cultivating empathy for others. These skills are essential in helping children grow into well-rounded individuals and in reinforcing that a full range of emotions is both normal and healthy. Because navigating emotions can be challenging even in adulthood, introducing these skills early allows students to build strong emotional awareness and interpersonal skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Is there anything top of mind in the year ahead that excited you?

I am excited about the upcoming school and family events this school year. Events such as the Winter Olympics, Open Plays in the Bear Den, and World Fest provide meaningful opportunities to build community, and I have heard wonderful things about each of them. I am truly looking forward to being involved and supporting these events in any way possible. I am also continually impressed by the passion and dedication of the staff and faculty, who work intentionally to make each day impactful for students. The care, thoughtfulness, and preparation that go into both daily learning and special events are remarkable and further strengthen my enthusiasm for being part of this school community.

What is something families might not know about you that you want to share?

Something families might not know about me is that I’m passionate about carpentry and wakeboarding. I’ve built everything from fences and large-scale frames to dining room tables. I love the creativity and hands-on challenge it brings. Back when I lived in Florida, my free time was split between working on woodworking projects and wakeboarding on the lakes. I’m a big fan of being outdoors and in the water, so I’m especially excited to explore the beaches here in New York.

Leadership Spotlight: Director Cameron, Middle School Program

January 26, 2026 by jogoldfarb Leave a Comment

The Middle School Program at BASIS Independent Brooklyn is carefully designed both to challenge and support students during a very impressionable time. We believe middle school is a time for building strong foundational knowledge in a wide variety of subjects while growing a student’s autonomy and self-discipline needed for critical inquiry.

Pairing challenge with the right support is core to our Middle School Program. Leading the charge is Director Shantell Cameron. For the past three years, she has worked tirelessly to complement the internationally benchmarked academics with joy in learning and excitement in community. With roots in the classroom, Ms. Cameron first joined our school as a Gr. 2 Learning Expert Teacher nearly eight years ago before moving into school leadership, first as a Dean of Students, then as a Director at our Upper School campus.

Ms. Cameron has been educating young minds for nearly two decades. She obtained her master’s degree in education in 2014, and previously taught and worked in administration at another private school before joining our community. We sat down with her to ask some questions that might help convey all that Ms. Cameron manages at our school and her vision for the Middle School Program.

What is a typical day for you as Director of the Middle School?

As the Middle School Director, I work closely with teachers to ensure they have the support they need to thrive in the classroom. I collaborate with my team daily to continue building a positive Middle School culture—one that is not only academically strong but also fun and engaging for students. My days include observing classes, providing meaningful feedback to teachers, and managing escalated situations with students or staff as they arise. I also partner with families to make sure we are supporting their children both in school and at home, reinforcing our commitment to developing well-rounded students.

Our Middle School Program is known for challenging students to the highest international levels. How do you support the whole student in these critical years?

Middle School is one of the most challenging stages in a student’s life. It’s a pivotal time for both cognitive and emotional growth. At our school, the curriculum is intentionally rigorous, which can sometimes feel overwhelming for students and families. Because of this, I believe it’s essential to balance high academic expectations with meaningful social and emotional support.

To support students academically, we provide multiple layers of help. In addition to weekly student hours, students can work with peer tutors from our High School Program when they need extra reinforcement in specific subjects. We also offer a student support program where students collaborate with their advisor, the Dean, and their teachers to create an individualized plan that helps them navigate our demanding curriculum. We know that academic rigor and accountability can be challenging for middle schoolers as they learn to manage their grades and keep up with the pace of coursework.

Equally important is supporting our students’ social-emotional development. I am a strong believer in building and maintaining a positive school culture where students feel a genuine sense of belonging and have things to look forward to beyond academics. When a student has a passion, whether it’s a club, sport, or committee, I strongly encourage them to participate. Those are the opportunities that help them grow socially and build confidence.

What do you think stands apart about our Middle School program?

Our Middle School Program is truly unique; saying it stands out among other middle schools across the city and state is an understatement. We are a community that strives to support every student and partner closely with every family. When I think about what sets us apart, a few key pillars come to mind:

• Belonging: Our students and families consistently feel a strong sense of belonging because we operate not only as a school community but as a family. As Director, I value maintaining an open-door policy where students can stop by to share feedback, ask questions, or simply say hello. I avoid a strict “by appointment only” approach because it’s important that students and teachers feel heard and know their voice matters

• Support System: Our support system is exceptional and truly caters to teachers, students, and families. We approach every situation with flexibility, an open mind, and a commitment to keeping students at the center. This not only strengthens the sense of belonging but also creates a warm, family-oriented environment. The level of support provided by our administrative team is unlike that of many middle schools. Here, no teacher or student is “just a number.” We work tirelessly to make sure everyone feels valued, heard, and fully supported.

• Curriculum: Our curriculum is “first class” and speaks for itself. Our Middle School students are preparing for high school in ways many schools don’t even consider. By the time they complete our program, students are ready for college-level coursework, perform extremely well on standardized tests in high school (PSAT, SAT, and Advanced Placement exams), and show strong results on our midterms and final exams (Pre-Comps and Comps). Our elective offerings give students opportunities to explore passions and potential career interests early on. In short, our curriculum prepares students not just for our high school but for future success beyond the classroom.

• Teachers: Most importantly, our teachers are a defining strength of our program. We don’t just have educators; we have experts who truly love what they do. I witness daily how our teachers bring rigor to life through games, hands-on labs, debates that spark critical thinking, and culminating projects that connect learning to the real world. They give students the opportunity to take ownership of their learning, and that is not something found everywhere. Our teachers plan with every student in mind, rather than simply following a standard state-provided curriculum, allowing them to reach multiple learning styles in meaningful ways. I am honored to lead a program that demonstrates consistent growth, care, and respect.

You have been a big proponent of building a strong school culture during your years at the school. What programs have you started to build a great culture supporting students and teachers in Middle School?

Due to my firm belief in creating well-rounded students, I am constantly seeking ways to strengthen our school’s culture. Middle school students thrive when they have opportunities to collaborate and engage outside the classroom. Over my five years on the Administration team, both in Primary and Middle School, I have started and supported numerous programs to foster community, connection, and tradition:

  • Grade 8 Overnight/Lock-In: In my first year as Middle School Director, I established the Grade 8 Overnight, where students spend the night at school, enjoying games and fun activities. This December will mark our third Overnight.
Our Gr. 8 Lock In chaperones bonded in their matching PJs and bear slippers, which Director Cameron ordered.
  • Grade 8 Washington, D.C./Charlottesville Trip: Alongside Mr. Piel (U.S. History SET), I led the creation of this trip, which provides students with hands-on historical and civic learning experiences. It has become an annual tradition in March.
  • Grade 8 Celebration: I created a celebration to honor our eighth graders for completing the Middle School program. While not a formal graduation, this event recognizes students’ achievements and brings families together to celebrate their successes. This year will be the third celebration.
  • Grade 6 Ice-Skating Trip: To reward students after completing Pre-Comps, I started a fun Ice-Skating trip for Grade 6 students. This social tradition helps students celebrate academic milestones and connect with peers.
  • Parent University-Style Forums: I collaborated with administration and external partners to create forums supporting families, including the “Inside Scoop to Pre-Comps and Comps” for Grade 6 families and an Executive Functioning Workshop for parents in Grades 5–8. These forums help families support their students academically and socially at home.
  • Recess for Middle School Students: Working with the Dean, we introduced AE Recess, giving students the option for downtime and socialization three times a week. This initiative was based on student and parent feedback and strengthens our supportive community.
  • Increased Teacher Collaboration: I encouraged a schedule (weekly team meetings) that allows teachers to collaborate more effectively, share best practices, and strengthen professional partnerships across departments.

All of these initiatives are designed to build and improve culture in the Middle School, providing students, teachers, and families with a fuller, more meaningful school experience. I am committed to continuing to create traditions and opportunities that positively impact both academics and student life.

Our school integrated a “no cell phone” policy last school year. From your perspective as the Director, how has that changed the school day or experience for students in the Middle School Program?

Our no cell phone policy has drastically changed the dynamics of Middle School. I have observed students becoming more focused in the classroom, more socially engaged with their peers, and building stronger self-advocacy skills. Over the past few years, cell phones and other personal devices played a significant role in students’ daily lives. While these technologies have positive attributes, they often disrupted the traditional school experience, a structure that, in my view, is essential for holding students accountable for their learning.

Since implementing this policy, I have seen students conversing more with peers in classrooms, cafeterias, and hallways, participating more actively in lessons, and choosing to be fully involved in the school community. Additionally, we have seen a significant decrease in suspensions related to cyberbullying or inappropriate phone use during school hours. Overall, this policy has strengthened both the academic and social-emotional environment of our Middle School.

You have been at our school for many years, first as a Learning Expert Teacher (LET), then as a Dean, and now as Director. What drew you to BASIS Independent Brooklyn (and keeps you coming back)?

This is my eighth school year here at BASIS Independent Brooklyn, and each year truly gets better. I was initially drawn to this school because of its commitment to genuine skill mastery rather than simply teaching to a test. I also value the strong support system in place for teachers, students, and families, as it consistently leads to positive experiences and outcomes.

Before joining our school, I taught at a small private school on Long Island that held similar beliefs and standards, which made the transition here feel natural. One of the things I appreciate most is that teaching is not the end of the road; there are always meaningful opportunities for professional growth, supported by people who genuinely want to see you thrive. I’m proud to be an example of that, having grown from a classroom teacher (Learning Expert Teacher) to Primary School Dean of Students, Primary School Director, and now Middle School Director.

Each role has reinforced what makes BASIS Independent Brooklyn truly special: a community that strives for excellence, a culture of care, and a curriculum that stands apart from other schools. Our teachers and students are deeply passionate about their work, and together they create the warm, supportive environment that defines who we are.

To me, BASIS Independent Brooklyn feels like family more than just a school, and that is what brings me back year after year. It keeps getting better, and we continue to grow stronger together.

What is something families might not know about you that you want to share?

I travel quite a distance each day to get to work, coming from Freeport, Long Island. I do it wholeheartedly because I truly love my job and the people I get to collaborate with. My colleagues make each day meaningful and fun.

I also have a musical background. I play the clarinet, saxophone, and flute, and I originally attended SUNY Potsdam for music education and performance before shifting my focus to teaching. Once my youngest son is a bit older, I hope to join a band or orchestra again as a personal passion project.

Education runs in my family. My relatives owned early learning schools on Long Island, where I worked as a teenager. I also tutored many of their students. That early exposure is where my love for education really began.

Before coming to BASIS Independent Brooklyn, I had the opportunity to serve as the interim Head of School at my previous school while the Head of School was on long-term medical leave. That experience gave me my first hands-on introduction to school leadership.

And last but certainly not least, I am a single mom to three wonderful children, a daughter who is 19, and two sons who are 14 and 5. Because of them, I get to experience all levels of childhood and adolescence at home, which adds a meaningful perspective to my work in school.

Meet Our New Subject Expert Teacher: Ms. Taylor Goldschmiedt

January 26, 2026 by mirandamartinez Leave a Comment

Ms. Taylor first joined BASIS Independent Schools as a Subject Expert Biology Teacher at Fremont Upper School. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science and a Master of Science in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of New Haven, providing her with a strong foundation in both scientific theory and applied research. Her academic background allows her to bring real-world relevance and depth to the study of biology, helping students connect classroom learning to practical applications.

As an educator, Ms. Taylor is dedicated to fostering a genuine love of learning while guiding students toward a strong and lasting understanding of biological concepts. She recognizes that every student is unique and approaches learning in different ways. With this in mind, she is committed to creating an inclusive, engaging, and supportive classroom environment where students feel confident asking questions, taking intellectual risks, and exploring new ideas. Through hands-on activities, thoughtful discussions, and individualized guidance, she encourages students to become active participants in their own learning.

Ms. Taylor strongly believes in the value of active learning and personalized instruction. She works closely with each student to identify strengths, address challenges, and develop effective learning strategies that support academic growth. Her goal is not only to help students succeed in biology but also to equip them with critical thinking skills, curiosity, and confidence that will serve them well across all areas of study. Ms. Taylor is proud to be a founding member of BASIS Independent Dublin.

Outside of the classroom, Ms. Taylor enjoys spending time with family and friends, exploring the outdoors through hiking, and traveling. These interests allow her to recharge and bring fresh perspectives and enthusiasm back to her work with students.

Are there any highlights you’d like to share about your teaching philosophy or approach?

I really love seeing that moment when something finally clicks for a student. In my classroom, we use a variety of tools and approaches so students can learn in the way that works best for them—whether that’s through discussion, visuals, hands-on activities, or creative work. Every student learns differently and at their own pace, and I try to give them multiple ways to engage with the material so they feel confident and supported as they build understanding.

What are some of the most rewarding parts of being a Subject Expert Teacher and working with BASIS Independent Schools students?

The most rewarding part of my job is the relationships I build with my students. I work with middle schoolers across grades 6 – 8 currently, and having students for multiple years allows those relationships to really grow. They come into class sharing stories from their weekends, telling jokes, talking about daily drama, or even asking for advice. That connection makes the classroom feel welcoming and fun, and it motivates me every day to support them, challenge them, and help them succeed.

Are there any thoughts that you’d like to share with families who are joining – or who are thinking of joining – the BASIS Independent Dublin community?

I truly encourage families to join the BASIS Independent Dublin community. It’s an environment where teachers genuinely care about helping students succeed, and students are motivated to push themselves academically. What stands out most is how supportive the community is. Students encourage one another, learn from setbacks, and celebrate each other’s successes. It’s a place where students are challenged, supported, and surrounded by peers who want to grow together.
