Meet Our New Curriculum Coordinator, Ms. Madison Pomeroy

Meet Our New Curriculum Coordinator, Ms. Madison Pomeroy

June 12, 2026 by nathanielyinger Leave a Comment

Ms. Pomeroy received her BA from Saint Mary’s College of California in the Integral Program, where some of her favorite classes revolved around philosophy and astronomy. While pursuing her undergraduate degree, Ms. Pomeroy started coaching girls’ high school soccer at her alma mater; her coaching experience directly contributed to Ms. Pomeroy developing her passion for teaching.

Ms. Pomeroy has spent the past five years as a classroom teacher, teaching grade 1 and grade 4. In addition to classroom teaching, she took on additional responsibilities including serving on her school’s leadership team, instructional coach, joining WASC visiting accreditation committees, and as the school’s athletic director.  During this time, she completed her Master’s of Education at the University of Massachusetts.

Outside of school, Ms. Pomeroy is an avid sports fan. She loves to watch any and all sports with a particular interest in soccer, baseball and football. Ms. Pomeroy loves to read and spend time with her puppy, Maverick, and her fiancé, Ismael.

What inspired you to work in schools, and what drew you to the BASIS Independent Dublin community?
My inspiration to work in schools actually originated from my time as a soccer coach. In 2016, I began my coaching career at Clayton Valley Charter High School as the women’s junior varsity coach. Although I was not that much older than the girls I was coaching, I could see the influence I was having on them and it inspired me to want to continue on that path. After I graduated from college, I started to explore different pathways to continue working with students in other capacities.

I am lucky enough to have experience working with students ranging in age from kindergarten to high school. One of the challenges that I’ve most enjoyed in my teaching career is working with the highest achieving students. When I first learned about BASIS Independent Dublin and began exploring the rigorous curriculum and the ways in which BASIS Independent Schools students are able to take ownership of their learning, I was instantly intrigued.

More specifically, what attracted you to curriculum development, and what are some of the key considerations you have in mind when analyzing, refining, and implementing curriculum?
Since becoming a teacher, I have always been interested in curriculum development because I quickly realized how much curriculum impacts both teacher and student success. Not all curriculum programs are teacher-friendly or accessible for diverse learners, and that challenge motivates me to adapt and refine materials to better meet the needs of my students and colleagues. Throughout the past five years in the classroom and through my experiences on my prior school’s leadership team, I have developed a strong understanding of how thoughtful curriculum design can improve engagement, rigor and consistency across classrooms.

I believe curriculum should be data-informed and continuously improved through reflection, assessments, and collaboration with educators. My experience has really strengthened my ability to think strategically about effective curriculum implantation and continuous improvement.

What aspect(s) of your new role are you most excited about?
I am most excited to make a broader impact beyond a single classroom. Curriculum development combines many of the aspects of education that I am most passionate about, including instructional design and collaboration supporting both students and teachers. Having the chance to be a part of the Academic Programs team is an exciting opportunity that I am looking forward to!

From Apollo to Artemis: How Kindergarten Engineers are Mapping the Future of Space Flight

June 11, 2026 by christineklayman Leave a Comment

While the world watched the successful splashdown of the Artemis II mission, the Kindergarteners at BASIS Independent Manhattan were already deep into their own lunar preparations. In engineering class, a simple pile of LEGO bricks became a lesson in the high-stakes world of aerospace, where our early learning students discovered a fundamental truth: in engineering, every single detail matters.

five students stand in front of a white board that says "We are going back to the moon" and they are holding their straw rockets.

An Interdisciplinary Preview

At BASIS Independent Manhattan, we often speak about our “spiraling curriculum.” For this lesson, that spiral started early. Before picking up a single block, students discussed the meaning behind the name Artemis.

This served as a fascinating interdisciplinary bridge to grade 5 Classics, where students dive deep into Greek mythology and history. By connecting a modern NASA mission to ancient stories, our students could understand how science, history, and culture are never truly separate.

a boy student holds up a design of a space launching system with the rocket and parts labeled in front of a LEGO model.

Mastering Propulsion and Design

The classroom was a hub of “focused fun” as students deconstructed the complexities of a Space Launch System (SLS).

  • Structural Integrity: Using LEGO, Kindergarteners designed launch systems that required balance and strength to stand tall for “liftoff.”
  • The Science of Flight: Through “straw rockets,” students experimented with the mechanics of propulsion, learning how force and direction dictate a successful trajectory.
A Facebook post from NASA History that shows the Apollo 12 astronauts with the helicopter flying over to recover them.

A Living Connection to History

The lesson took a personal turn thanks to our Kindergarten Teaching Fellow, Ms. Kelly. She shared a remarkable piece of her own family legacy: her father was a Navy pilot who flew the recovery helicopters for the original Apollo missions.

Students looked at archival photos of these recovery missions, realizing that the “splashdown” they were watching on TV – that the world was watching – connected directly to members of their own school community who were part of this carefully constructed operation’s evolution. This use of primary sources and personal narratives is a hallmark of the inquiry-based learning in our Lower School.

“We Will Follow Her There”

Perhaps the most powerful moment came during a discussion about the first female astronaut to journey toward the moon on the Artemis mission. The representation on screen sparked an immediate reaction from several of our students.

“We’re going to follow her there one day so we can explore the moon, too,” they remarked.

What our teachers marveled at most wasn’t that the students learned the mechanics of a rocket, but that they gained the confidence to believe in themselves to accomplish a feat like that in their future. We provide the tools, the content, and the encouragement for them to aim for the stars—literally.

Congratulations to Teacher Danae, Recently Named Subject Advisor for BASIS Independent Schools!

June 8, 2026 by nathanielyinger Leave a Comment

At BASIS Independent Dublin, our academic excellence will be built upon the expertise, passion, and dedication of our Subject Expert Teachers. Today, we are proud to celebrate an exciting achievement within our faculty community: one of our Subject Expert Teachers, Teacher Danae, has been selected to serve as a Subject Advisor (SAD) for the BASIS Curriculum Schools network!

This appointment is not only a recognition of their exceptional teaching and subject-matter expertise – it also highlights the caliber of educators who make BASIS Independent Dublin such a distinctive learning community.

“I’m honored to serve as the Visual Arts Subject Advisor,” said Teacher Danae. “As SAD, I hope to foster strong connections between the Visual Arts Subject Expert Teachers in our network and to help incorporate more cross-curricular learning opportunities at every grade level. Having taught art to BASIS Independent Schools students across all grades, I have worked to connect the techniques, mediums, and styles that we apply in art class to what is being taught in their other classes, such as time periods covered in history and languages, or the chemistry of chemical reactions when firing clay and glazes. Ultimately, I hope to enrich learning for our students through both art-appreciation and as a means of self-expression.”

What Is a Subject Advisor?
Across the BASIS Curriculum Schools network, every required course, and many electives, are supported by a dedicated Subject Advisor. These educators are experienced classroom teachers who take on an expanded leadership role as extensions of the BASIS Curriculum Team.

Subject Advisors, or SADs as they are affectionately called, are responsible for continuously refining and strengthening curriculum content, ensuring that courses remain rigorous, engaging, and aligned from one grade level to the next. They collaborate with other Subject Expert Teachers across the network, analyze student performance data, incorporate emerging developments within their fields, and help shape the educational experiences of thousands of students worldwide.

Most importantly, Subject Advisors remain active classroom teachers, bringing real-world teaching experience directly into curriculum development.

The Power of Subject Expert Teachers
One of the defining features of a BASIS Independent Dublin education is the Subject Expert Teacher model. Rather than teaching across multiple disciplines, our teachers specialize in the subjects they know and love most.

The appointment of a faculty member as a Subject Advisor further demonstrates the depth of expertise within BASIS Independent Dublin’s academic program. These educators are not only teaching students each day, they are helping shape the BASIS Curriculum and instructional practices across our network of schools.

For families considering BASIS Independent Dublin, this distinction offers a meaningful glimpse into the quality of instruction students will receive. Our classrooms will be led by educators who are recognized as leaders in their fields and trusted to guide curriculum development for their peers.

Building Community Through Collaboration
The impact of a Subject Advisor extends far beyond curriculum updates. Throughout the year, Subject Advisors foster professional learning communities by facilitating discussions, sharing instructional resources, leading network-wide meetings, and connecting teachers across campuses. Through newsletters, collaborative forums, and professional development opportunities, they help create a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

This network of collaboration benefits not only teachers but also students, who gain from the collective knowledge and best practices of educators across BASIS Independent and International Schools.

A Reflection of Our Growing Community
As BASIS Independent Dublin continues to grow, accomplishments like this reinforce what makes our school community special. We are building more than a campus – we are cultivating a community of exceptional educators, ambitious students, and engaged families who value academic excellence.

The appointment of a new Subject Advisor serves as a reminder that our Subject Expert Teachers are not only experts in their classrooms but also contributors to a broader educational mission that impacts students across the network.

We are proud to celebrate this achievement and look forward to the many ways our newest Subject Advisor will continue to enrich the educational experience at BASIS Independent Dublin and beyond.

Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition, Teacher Danae! Your leadership, expertise, and commitment to academic excellence help make our community stronger every day.

Term Project Spotlight: Exploring Creativity Through Glass Blowing and Fusing

June 5, 2026 by ezekielbracamonte Leave a Comment

What happens when students step outside the traditional classroom and into a glass studio? In this hands-on Term Project, students in grades 9–11 explored the art and science of glass through both on-campus creation and real-world experience.

Students spent the week working with both hot and cold glass, discovering new techniques and pushing their creativity in exciting ways. On campus, they practiced glass fusion by designing their own pieces, cutting cold glass, and firing their work in a kiln. These projects ranged from detailed pendants to larger glass scenes, each one showcasing careful planning and artistic expression. As Max P. shared, the experience offered “so much creative liberty,” giving students the freedom to explore their own ideas while building new skills.

Field Trip to Bay Area Glass Institute

The experience extended beyond campus with a visit to the Bay Area Glass Institute (BAGI), where students worked with hot glass reaching temperatures of nearly 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. With guidance from professional instructors, they rotated, blew, and shaped molten glass to create their own bowls. Students selected their preferred shapes and colors, watching as clear glass was rolled in vibrant frit—small pieces of colored glass—before being transformed into one-of-a-kind pieces. Reflecting on the experience, Rachel Van Dusen summed it up simply: “It blew me away.”

Over the course of the project, each student completed at least three pieces: a blown glass bowl, a small fused pendant, and a larger fused design. Along the way, they gained not only technical skills, but also a deeper appreciation for the medium. As teacher Sarah Hetu noted, “This Term Project brought students a great respect for working with glass—we truly learned that challenging mediums give us the most rewarding work.”

Beyond the techniques, students valued the opportunity to collaborate, create, and enjoy the process together. Mansi S. shared that the project allowed her to “be productive and have fun with my friends and teachers,” while Ximo (George) T. added that he “would definitely do it again.” For some, the impact was lasting—Olivia X. reflected, “Glass blowing changed my life.”

The week concluded with a Glass Showcase, where students proudly displayed their creations for families and staff to enjoy, celebrating all they had learned and accomplished.

From first cuts of cold glass to shaping molten material in the studio, this Term Project gave students a unique opportunity to explore creativity in a completely new medium—one that challenged them, inspired them, and left a lasting impression.

Making Science Come to Life: Every Spring, Our Cubs Watch Life Change Before Their Eyes

June 5, 2026 by jogoldfarb Leave a Comment

There’s a moment that happens every spring in our Lower School classrooms when a hush falls over a group of young Cubs as they peer into a glass container and watch, with wide eyes, as something that was once a tiny egg or a wriggling larva becomes something entirely different. It’s the kind of moment no worksheet or video can replicate.

That’s exactly why, for several weeks each spring, our Lower School dedicates itself to one of science’s most wondrous stories: the life cycle.

“In an urban environment where kids don’t get as much exposure on a day-to-day basis to nature, anything we can do to bring the natural world to life for students is really important,” commented Head of the Lower School Ms. Miller-Sims. “When you can put a living creature in front of them and observe the life cycle from the beginning, you just see it light up in their eyes in a completely different way than learning about it on a screen, or learning about it in a textbook, or talking about it through a discussion in class. Those moments are just so pivotal, because it is what the children will remember and constantly go back to, even as they age, remembering these foundational experiences.”

Engaging, Experiential Learning

From PreK through Grade 2, our students don’t just read about how living things grow and change; they witness it. Each year, our campus becomes a living science lab as we welcome a carefully chosen cast of creatures: caterpillars that spin themselves into chrysalises, tadpoles paddling in tanks, ladybug larvae inching along leaves, and eggs nestled in a warm incubator, waiting to hatch.

The goal isn’t just to teach biology. It’s to give children a visceral, unforgettable understanding of transformation, and allow them to see that living things change, grow, and become something new, right in front of their eyes.

“When students see something happening in real time, they really learn the best that way,” stated Grade 2 Math and Science Subject Expert Teacher Ms. Witherspoon. “When we have our eggs in our incubator, they can see how they are growing inside. Yes, we have a chart where they can see inside the egg. It’s different when you see it day by day. Once the chicks hatch, they can see how fast they may grow, or that not all chicks are yellow, learning about different colors and different breeds. The joy on their faces when they learn something and see it in person is just really unforgettable.”

Students observing the growth of tadpoles in Kindergarten

Why Hands-On Learning Matters

Young children learn best when they can touch, observe, and wonder. Watching a tadpole sprout tiny legs over the course of a week is a lesson in patience, curiosity, and scientific observation all at once. Checking on a tray of eggs each morning teaches children to look closely for details, to notice small changes, and to ask questions. When a chrysalis finally opens, the room fills with a kind of collective awe that’s impossible to manufacture and impossible to forget.

“The whole school gets involved by the time our chicks are hatching,” said Ms. Witherspoon. “I get parents, all the time, sharing that they are learning just as much as their children are learning. It’s great just to see from our littlest ones in the PreK classrooms to our oldest ones in Grade 2 how they are all just curious at the end of the day.”

These experiences also build a foundation for scientific thinking that will serve our Cubs for years to come. They begin to understand that nature operates on its own timeline, that change is a process, and that the world is full of living things undergoing their own remarkable journeys.

The Lineup This Spring

Each creature we bring to campus represents a different kind of life cycle story:

Caterpillars to chrysalises to butterflies: Students observe the transformation from larva to winged insect, learning about metamorphosis up close.

Tadpoles: The classic frog life cycle unfolds in a classroom tank, day by day.

Ladybug larvae: These spotted favorites go through a dramatic transformation that surprises even the adults in the room.

Chick eggs: Perhaps the most anticipated of all, children gather around the incubator and wait (and wait and wait) for the first signs of hatching. “Chick watch” is the term we use, and this year, Ms. Witherspoon helped welcome the great-grand chicks of the first chicks hatched in her classroom three years ago!

A Tradition Worth Protecting

In an age of screens and simulations, there’s something quietly radical about putting a living creature in a child’s classroom and saying: watch what happens. Our Lower School’s life cycle unit is one of those rare school experiences that students carry with them long after the school year ends- the spring they saw a chick hatch, the morning they noticed the tadpole had legs.

We’re proud to offer our Cubs this window into the natural world, and we are committed to nurturing their curiosity in such engaging ways for years to come.

Spring Sports Recap: Continuing to Build a Strong Tradition of Mountaineer Athletics

June 4, 2026 by emilyhughes Leave a Comment

The Mountaineers wrapped up another successful spring season filled with hard work, growth, and outstanding performances. From an undefeated tennis season to record breaking results on the track, our student athletes gave us plenty to celebrate.

Tennis Continues Its Winning Tradition

The Mountaineers Tennis Team enjoyed an excellent season under the leadership of Coach McGrain. The team of 11 athletes worked hard throughout the spring, sharpening their skills and challenging one another to improve each day.

After finishing undefeated during the program’s inaugural season, the team continued that tradition by completing its second consecutive undefeated season with a perfect 7-0 record.

The team earned victories over Bear Creek, Brighton, Eastside Prep, and Eastside Christian. While many matches were decided comfortably in the Mountaineers’ favor, Eastside Prep provided some of the toughest competition of the season and pushed our athletes to play their best tennis.

Special recognition goes to Lydia Z. (5Rh) and Jonathan P. (5Cr), who both completed the season without losing a match. In addition to their success on the court, they consistently demonstrated exceptional effort in practice and outstanding sportsmanship throughout the season.

Congratulations to Coach McGrain and the entire tennis team on another undefeated season.

Track and Field Athletes Reach New Heights

The Mountaineers Track & Field team competed in five meets this spring and produced several memorable performances.

One of the season’s biggest highlights came from Brian Z. in grade 8, who set a new school record in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 2 inches. Brian finished his season by earning second place in the long jump at the CMSL (Cascade Middle School League) Final Meet.

Another standout performer was Jason Z. in grade 6. Competing against older athletes throughout the season, Jason showed tremendous improvement across all of his events. His hard work paid off with an impressive third place finish in the 100-meter dash at the CMSL Final Meet, despite competing primarily against grade 7 and 8 students.

Ivy Z. in grade 8, once again delivered an outstanding season in the middle and long distance events. At the CMSL Final Meet, she earned second place in the 400-meter run and first place in the 800-meter run. Ivy currently holds school records in the 400m, 800m, and 1600m, cementing her place among the most accomplished track athletes in program history.

Brian Z.
Sisters Iris Z. and Ivy Z.
Jason Z.

These accomplishments reflect the dedication and perseverance shown by our student athletes throughout the season.

Congratulations to all of our spring athletes and coaches on another successful season. Whether setting records, earning victories, or supporting teammates, our Mountaineers represented BASIS Independent Bellevue with pride throughout the spring.

Looking Ahead

As we turn the page to a new school year, we are excited for the return of Girls Volleyball, Co-ed Soccer, and Swim this fall. We look forward to welcoming both returning and new athletes as we continue building a strong tradition of Mountaineer Athletics. More information regarding fall athletics will be shared later this summer. Until then, have a wonderful summer and “Go Mountaineers!”

The evening also allowed alumni across graduating classes to connect with one another. Older graduates offered advice and encouragement to more recent alumni, creating meaningful conversations about navigating college, internships, networking, and balancing responsibilities. The shared experiences and support highlighted the strength of the BASIS Independent Schools community and the lasting bonds formed through it.

As the evening came to a close, one thing was clear: while graduation may mark the end of a chapter, it does not end the relationships, mentorship, and sense of belonging that continue to connect BASIS Independent Schools alumni to one another and to the school community.

BASIS Independent students take a daily class solely dedicated to college counseling throughout their senior year. The focus is to help seniors identify, target, and ultimately gain admission to the college or university best suited for them. Our expert College Counselors are dedicated to understanding each student’s strengths and aspirations, and teaching them how to convey themselves compellingly in the college admissions and scholarship application processes. They work closely with our students to explore their passions, career interests, and long-term goals, and provide personal letters of recommendation and ongoing support during the application process itself.
